Drum Sets: Used vs. Cheap, New

Hi, everyone.

I'm a very beginner drummer: I've taken some lessons, and have been using a drumming pad. I'd like to start exploring on an actual drum set though. I'm wondering what advice people have in terms of selecting a drum set for a beginner. Money is an issue, so I was thinking of buying a used set or a cheap, new one. Which would be better? Or does it not really matter? Also, what brands are recommended for beginners?

Thank you very much for your advice! It is greatly appreciated.

Is that the minimum or maximum?
(I'm usually finding kits for $500-$800 but
I know a kit that you might be looking for.
just give me the answer to that question.)
also, do you care if a shell pack is an option?
I know some complete kits for your range,
but I'm just checking.

If you accept shell packs,
heres one...
A Pdp F5 I belive.
The shell pack is for your level and Pdp
is a pretty well known name that was made from DW (A very expencive drum company that you can find common sets for $1000-$12000) in 2000. It is new and can be bought online.
here's a link:Buy Pacific Drums by DW Z5 5-Piece Shell Pack | Shell Packs | Musician's Friend
It comes in multiple colors.
THE SET GOES FOR $265 WITH FREE SHIPPING!!!!
NOTE: shell packs are different than drum sets. They only include the shells,
mounting hardware, (lugs, tom arms, tension rods, hoops, bass drum claws and spurs,
etc...) and drum heads. The things that they DO NOT include is the cymbals, cymbal stands, snare drum stands, hi-hat stands, and bass drum pedal(s).
This is an excellent drum shell pack and an amazing little set.
I can name a few more sets. if this one is not what your looking for.
Good luck!

I would prefer a complete set.

What is your opinion on buying a name-brand, used set over a new, lower-quality set? I've been reading around, and I've been seeing varying opinions. Some people say that buying cheap, lower-quality sets can deter someone from wanting to play; it's better to find a used, name-brand set.

I would have to say it is better to start off on the best equipment you can afford. If you are not too proud (and some of us drummers can be), the best drumset to dollar value you will find is when you buy used and that is even more true in this economy.

I personally would take a higher quality used kit over a new entry level kit any day of the week.

I'm an beginner too.

My band had a first act (trashed in a week).

From what I've heard, get a Tama. Very durable.

Second that, Ex: If I purchased my new snare new, it would have cost me about $250-350 more then what i bought it at.

Re: Drum Sets: Used vs. Cheap, New

I just purchased a mint vintage (70ish) 9 piece top of the line Ludwig with 6 sabian cymbals and all hardware in there mohogany finish. There insanely beautiful, double base, pedals, no scratches. $4,500 - $5,000 new. I paid $1,250.00! Maple shells. Drums of my dreams although huge kit! I found it on craigslist! They're out there! I got lucky too. These things sound insane as they are all power toms. The larger of the two floor toms sounds like a frikin cannon. This guy just could not use the size anymore. Might be a problem for me too but I will work around it!
