First of all thanks to everyone for all the help so far. After buying a used set for my son I cleaned out his snare drum and replaced the heads and snare on it. Based on info from this site I got the Evans Genera Dry Batter and Evans Hazy 300. Wow! The snare drum sounds incredibly rich!

Here's my very silly question about snare drums. When not in use are you suppose to keep the snares disengage?

By placing the snare throw-off in the release position, you get more life out of the snares.

Constant tension on the snares will shorten the life of the snares. In other words, less wear and tear in the long run.
