I really like pdp, and have never been found of pearl, ever. My gig kit is a pdp mapel and i love it, used to have a pearl studio, cost me about 4 times as much and id still rather play the PDP.

Well the pdps maple shells are really good. But the designed of the vision vsf is based aroun the way pearl developed the reference series. And I have an x7 myself but based on the way the vision was developed I'd say vision.
Man, ive got this thing against Pearl drums for some reason. Their lugs just look cheap to me...other than the reference lugs. I dont like their logo, their colors usually suck and that double post tom mount reminds me of beginners kits. Their shells imo are second to NONE. I owned a set of red sparkle pdp's for awhile and i was pretty impressed with the tom sounds, the BD was impressive. Me?, id get the Pearl kit and put Sonor lugs on it.
I currently own a PDP CX maple series that I like quite a bit. That said, I don't think there's any question that Pearl's overall quality is quite a bit better than PDP's. Sound is something that no one else but you can decide on. I changed all the heads on my PDP kit when I got it, but with good quality heads, the drums sound very good. I've played many Pearl kits and one of the best snares I ever owned was a Pearl Sensitone many years ago.
Picked my son up the X7 Maple a couple months ago and we love this inexpensive all maple kit!I am an "old PEARLman"and struggled between the Vision a couple Tama kits and took the plunge with the PDP and am quite content.My son's instructor has played around 32 years and he could not believe the sound and value once I replaced the stock heads.Love this kit!
Yup, I gotta say that over all, I'm pleasantly surprised with my PDP CX maple kit. I like the idea that at the price I paid, my 22 inch bass drum has 10 lugs per side as does the snare. When I got this kit 14 months ago, there were NO kits in this price range with 10 lug bass/snare drums. Even now, as far as I can see, there's only 1 out there, the Sonor Force 3007 maple kits and they are a bit more expensive than the PDP. Good luck to your son!
