Tom reduction surgery.

Have any of you had any experience with reducing the size of your drums?. I have a 9x12 Sonor 3007 tom in blue sparkle that i want made into an 8x12. It is a split lug design with two screws anchoring each lug. Would Precision Drums simply take an inch from the bottom, move the lugs down and put an edge on it without filling in the old holes? or would i simply fill them in when the drum returns. I hope i described this so that its understandable. Thanks for any help.

Re: Tom reduction surgery.

you are talking about reducing the depth right?

Do you feel this will make enough of a difference to warrant the cost/headace?

Personally, I would experiment with different heads/ tunings before basically building a new drum.

But anyways, I suppose you could fill the holes with wood putty if they don't and sand it down.

Seems to me you might be able to find a used one or possibly even order a matching 8x12 for near the same cost as modifying the old one.

Doing surgery on a drum is a crime punishable by being locked in a room with Barry Manilow music playing 24/7. Don't do it. Buy another one. Give the one you don't like to someone who would cherish it. A blue sparkle Sonor tom? I'd sleep with it.

Mandy is one of my favorite tunes, i cant believe drummers that dont hear the difference an inch makes. its already stripped down and getting ready to ship to Precision drums. Its only a 3007 series tom, i wouldnt have this done to a signature or SQ2 drum. Im sure Precision will do a great job and the price is more than reasonable.

You do realize that this will give a higher pitch.

If that's what you want.

Altering a drum in this manner is like getting a hair cut. Once you cut it off, you can't put it back.

Sounds like buying one is better in the long run.
