Need advice on Dixon drum co.

Here are the specs.

This Dixon Demon 6-Piece Shell Pack includes a 22" x 20" kick, 10" x 7" and 12" x 8" toms, 14" x 12" and 16" x 14" floor toms, and a 13" x 6" snare.

Demon series drums feature 7-ply, 7.2mm birch/mahogany shells with 45° bearing edges, 1.6mm power hoops

haven't ever heard of this company but these have the exact sizes i want and i know that birch/mahogany is pretty good wood...but does anyone know more about this company...customer service...construction...quality...i'm looking to maybe buy soon so if anyone could give me some insight good or bad that would be awesome!!! you can find these drums on musiciansfriend.com...love the way they look love the sizes...just need to know if they're good!!!

Re: Need advice on Dixon drum co.

skinbeata,
Dixon Drums has a couple of threads posted on this website already. To read those threads, scroll to the top of a page on this site, find the white search rectangle, and type in "dixon." It will take you to a page, and on that page two availble threads on Dixon Drums will appear under the white line. Click on one at a time and read the whole thread.

The following is a post of mine from one of those threads:

"Well, I looked online for about a half hour, and I'm not sure Dixon Drums is doing too well. For starters, a lot of the shops in Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois that are listed on the website as selling Dixon drums don't show any Dixon Drums for sale or in stock. Second, Dixon has one video on YouTube from NAMM 2010, but it's not substantial. I went to the drummer's My Space page who is sponsored by Dixon, and there is no mention of Dixon Drums there. Maybe there's something on the Facebook page -- I didn't check.

"Maybe you could find something used from 2008 -- that's the year they won one of the "best new drumline" awards at NAMM. But I would be afraid to buy from them right now. I don't think they're in a position to stand behind what they sell."

Hope that helps.

Re: Need advice on Dixon drum co.

I have an OLD Dixon kit, called the Duke. I personally don't like the sound too much, but I don' know what it is about it, it's just not great. I'm not sure how old it is, or how much they have stepped up(or down) since then... if it were me, I'd try for different kits. Also remember, if it's a new kit, it'll come with drum company cymbals, which I find are... crap.

I'm Nick and I work with the Dixon Drums marketing team. I just to want to follow up to let you know Dixon Drums had a good 2009 and we are geared up for a good run in 2010. At Winter NAMM 2010 last month we released three new kits, the Demon in Black and Red Plasma finishes, and the Outlaw in Black Obsidian finish. We also have a new Bubinga snare.

We shot 5 videos at Winter NAMM this year, which we edited and uploaded from the show. This helped us get a lot of attention form people searching for drum news from NAMM.

Last year we released the Demon in Urban Camo Finish and a new series of hardware, the 900S series.

For the US market, Dixon does not sponsor any artists. However, we support drummer who are standing out like Lou Mars. He attempted to break the Guinness Book World Record for Marathon Drumming. We donated a Demon drum set to him that he raffled off to raise money for Little Kids Rock, an organization that raises money to get musical instruments for kids. We feature Lou extensively on our blog.

We have been doing other fun things like charity food drives for our dealers where kids can play Rock Band on a Dixon Demon drum set as well as local drummer meetups.

We understand the challenges that independent dealers are having. We are reaching out to dealers to help them with their websites, since most of them only update it a couple times per year. We gave a well received presentation to members of The Alliance of Independent Music Merchants at NAMM this year.

In the Dixon rep's post above it says, "At Winter NAMM 2010 last month we released three new kits, the Demon in Black and Red Plasma finishes, and the Outlaw in Black Obsidian finish. We also have a new Bubinga snare." So there are new products for 2010.

My guess is that the manufacturing process hasn't changed, but to find out for sure, you could email Nick@Dixon.

Re: Need advice on Dixon drum co.

Nick thank you for stopping in and bringing us up to speed on Dixon's health and line up.

Does Dixon make their own shells, or are the built by someone else to your design specs?

Re: Need advice on Dixon drum co.

Hi.
I'm Jim Stanek, Dixon Drums product manager for KMC music. I'd like to add to what Nick posted earier. Dixon drums has been around since 1979 mainly in the International market, but was distributed for a while in the USA, by a company called Davitt & Hanser. So you may still see a lot of entry level kits like the "Duke" or I believe "Tempo", as well as a 4x13 piccolo snare drum with round turret lugs, that was very popular at the time.

Kaman has been distributing Dixon Hardware for about 10 years now, and 3 years ago Kaman Music was given the oppurtunity to offer Dixon Drums in The US market. Dixon does make their own shells in their Taiwan and China Factories, so they have control over the specs and materials that are used. The manufacturing process has not changed other than the new product that was released this year at NAMM. I work together with the factories to design the drums and hardware for the USA market. The new 2010 products are currently in stock.

Thanks for the interest and please feel free to ask questions. I look forward to learning from everyone on the forum.

Jim
