20x22 bass drums.

I never liked 22'' bass drums period until i played an (18)x22. Ive played a couple 20x22's and they have seemed less immediate in response, more attacky than boomy but i never spent time with them. Anyone have any thoughts on these?. thanks.

The deeper the drum, the more boom and resonance. More for like Jazz & swing (Big Band) type of playing.

The shallower drum gives more attack with less boom. More for bop & metal style.

Re: 20x22 bass drums.

Taino: I just cant see a jazz drummer using a 20x22'' bass drum. I agree with you on the deeper=boomier up to a point. I went through a back issue of M.D. and read a review of the Ludwig Centennial kit with a 20x22'' bass drum. The reviewer mentioned how the bass drum should have sounded huge but it had less boom than he expected. His assumption was that at a 20'' depth the resonant head was so far away from the batter that you had to play it very forcefully to excite the front head for resonance.

I may have to experiment with various heads to get a 20x22 to sound as full bodied as an 18x22. I remember playing a 20x22 at JD Drum center in Omaha and the drum from behind the kit sounded great but when someone else played it while i stood out front it was oddly not near as beefy sounding as it was from behind the drum. Hmmm?, to be continued.
