Red face RACKS&RotoToms and such....

Some might remember my Lime Green X7 for my son that I couldn't stop yapping about, well I have added AAX Sabian,4 Wuhans and a few other discs of joy for his lil 9 year old hands to thrash and bang. We have way too much hardware and cymbals!..no I am not complaining but was thinking of adding a couple DW Piccolo toms or a set of Remo Rotos for some added depth with my fills and memories of terry and that tight Roto sound of Missing Persons...omg I am old...are they junk?even worth a try?..and have been looking at the Gibralter Starter Rack with wings to organize all my son's goodies and would attempt to stagger the extra toms over the 8",10",12" PDP mounted toms.(could I even do that?)You gurus have steered me in the right direction from day one of my purchase and I know I ask alot...what say you? thanx...should have posted in hardware section(sorry)

Here is a shortcut to Drum Kit Setups on YouTube.

This should give you some ideas.

Re: RACKS&RotoToms and such....

i think the yamaha hex rack is the best one out there. there are alot of companies that i have irrational, foundation-less aversions toward, and yamaha is one of them, so i would never buy it, but it does look like a great rack system.
pearl is another company i feel reluctant about, but their racks are square look pretty good, too.

those two racks would be the best to avoid slipping, i believe, which is a constant concern for rack-users. toms mounted on tube racks tend to slip if not tightened to extremes, i guess. i have never used a rack, but this is what i hear about them.
so, to avoid slipping, avoid round racks.

i dont think slipping is something that would deter me from buying a rack from a company i like.
i would go with gibraltar, just because i dont think that i would personally be too concerned with slipping, but that may be a big regret when i do buy a rack. we will see.

as for roto toms, i say go for it! i will get some eventually, just to have some fun with
i dont know if i would go for the remo rotos, though. remo is obviously a very prestigious brand, but because of that, they are very expensive. would you like to spend $270 on an addition that is more for fun than anything else? or would you like to save $170 by purchasing the brand that is cheaper and less prestigious, one that i am surprised even makes rotos?
whatever your choice, here is a link to buy a rotary kit from PULSE:
Buy Pulse Pro Rotary Tom Set | Add-On Packs | Musician's Friend
these guys are mostly cheap percussion, but with such a big difference in price, im going to go with the quality set-back and the financial savings when i decide to get roto toms. i would never buy anything else besides maybe sticks from pulse, but this particular deal is too much of an advantage to me.
i have never seen these roto toms from pulse, so they could be crap that falls apart in a few months. i dont know.

hope this helped.
btw, when are you gonna get pictures up of that sweet set???

butter,

I have found that with my Gibraltar rack I have gotten some slipping (rotating actually) of the clamps and that the feet could be longer giving it more stability. I would honestly say that if I were to replace this rack at any point in the future I would more than likely go with the Yamaha first followed by the Pearl.

Butter
1. You definitely do not strike me as irrational or foundationless. If it's true, this is a new
side of you that I'm seeing.
2. Great name for a group -- IFA (irrational foundationless aversion).
3. I use or have used Yamaha acoustic drums, Yamaha electronic drums, Yamaha motorcycles
and 4-wheelers, Yamaha outboards (on long trips in Lake Superior), Yamaha generators,
and a Yamaha toaster (just kidding). Your aversion to Yamaha is both irrational and
foundationless.

I'm still waiting for the Yamaha Flat Screen TV.

I here that it's gonna be about 10 feet wide. And that for the home edition.

They will be economical. After you turn it on, you can turn off the lights in the neighborhood.

Hey Bubbah, your suppose to tighten the clamps.

The the longer side of the feet are are suppose to be on the inside facing the throne.

I've had mine over five years now and I don't have any problems with the Gibraltar rack system. Well at least not yet.

Have you considered a DW rack?

time for me to clarify!!!

1. i suppose i do not like pearl and yamaha for the reason that the first time i ever used either of them, i was left with a terrible impression, and at the time, i was uneducated in the field of drums and equipment. because of my bad luck with these companies early on mixed with my lack of experience, i assumed all products by yamaha and pearl were the same quality i had used:

now, i am more open to the brands, but i still need proof that they are worth appreciation

my favorite brands are tama, mapex, sabian, and paiste, simply because the first time i played them, i played high quality stuff and was left with a good impression.
it is a fault of mine, i believe, to be so foolish in assuming such radical things. pearl and yamaha are both very reputable and they have some great equipment, i just have to get used to it im making progress i recommended them, so i dont totally despise them
2. that is a pretty good name. pretty long, but the initials make it okay.
3. i have a yamaha motorcycle. its really old, but it works. i only feel badly about yamaha drums.

let me know what you think... maybe i need therapy

You're as sane as they come, butter, and your experience and reactions are very normal, it seems to me. I will never view you as irrational and foundationless. You don't have to like Yamaha or Pearl.

I was just struck that you called yourself irrational and foundationless. No way. Had to comment on that.

Of course, we could give you some Yamaha sensitivity training.
