buying new jazz kit, gretsch or ludwig?

I am looking to buy a new kit and I've narrowed it down between the Gretsch catalina club and the Ludwig epic x over jazzette. I'm really looking for that nice open, warm sound with a lot of tone. The Gretsch is mahogany and the Ludwig is a combo of walnut and maple with an interior of poplar. The shell sizes are the same for both kits with a 14 x 18 bass. Any suggestions?
Also, are there any other kits I should be looking at?
My budget is around $1200

Thanks!

Catalina Club Rock or the Catalina Club Jazz?

Two different animals right there.

For $1,200 does that include cymbals?

Mahogany is a mellower sound and Maple is more of a dense sound.

I prefer Ludwig for jazz playing as opposed to Gretsch.

Then again, what type of sound are You looking for?

Jazz I know, but what type of jazz? Can you tell me what famous drummer's style you like?

Then that will help out other members to help you out. Can you dig that jazz?

Have you played on these kits? The Catalina Club, while the price is good, the sound is not so much. You only have 5 lugs and a 1.6mm hoop as opposed to the Luddy's having 2.3mm hoops and 6 lugs and the walnut/maple/walnut shell is a pretty badass combo....the birch reinforcement rings help the attack.

if you're going with Gretsch, at least do the New Classic bebop kit. heck, go crazy and play a Taye StudioMaple BeBop kit......I can't think of who else makes a straight up BeBop kit......but I'm sure I'm just not thinking.

what other brands have you tried?

My first kit was a Ludwig 1959 Black Onyx Rock Kit. That was 1969.

I had no reason to try these kits, but I have heard them while others played them at a music shop, Sam Ash.

If Mr. pondering_wanderer knows what he wants then maybe he could go with Tama or better still DW or PDP.

Are these prices better?
Now you can get some hard ware too.
