Re: Does anyone have a good reccomendation for a cheap (600 or 500) set

I agree with deanc54 about cymbals, Sabian B8's are great starter cymbals, although I am currently upgrading to all Sabian AAX or HHX cymbals. Any time I have used high end TAMA hardware it has been great, I also really like DW 9000 series hardware, that stuff is built like a tank.

I just saw your request and I think I can help you but first do you need cymbals as well?

Premier sets are showing up on Ebay for way under that and are great for the price. Stay away from cheap brands because once you lay out the bucks for them you will never get a good price if you want to upgrade. Stick with name brands. For example with a Premier set you will always be able to get your money back should you ever want to sell. See buying a drum set at oaklandbeachdrums.com

Pay attention to dtxtremeiiispecial. BUY USED!! BUY USED!! BUY USED!! You probably won't keep this kit for long anyway, especially if you buy a lower level kit that your ($500 to $600)price range can handle. That new kit will depreciate like a rock the minute you carry it out the door of the store, so if you later aren't in love with it, you will take a severe financial beating. There are always used Yamaha Stage Custom, Pearl Export, Tama Rockstar, Gretsch Catalina, pdp and others out there, usually with name-brand cymbals, at around half what they cost new, usually less than half. I have personally sold many of these kits used for $375 to $650, complete with Zildjian/Sabian/Meinl/Paiste cymbals, most in extremely nice condition. If you decide to sell those later, you will get a lot larger percentage of your money back.
My two cents.

I'm sort of in the same boat looking for a new kit, and right now I'm kinda' impressed with the Sonor Force series. The 2007s are birch, and the 3007s are maple, but construction looks good. It's a little higher for the shell pack, but from what I know about Sonor, all their higher end stuff DOES trickle down to their lower end. Don't exclude them.
