You get more bang for your buck if you buy used. Make sure they've taken care of it and it sounds good. You could look at any of the name brands.

I have a TAMA rockstar that I got for $400 on sale, I believe it is 500 regularly. Its a nice set with solid construction and it looks nice. Once I upgraded all the heads it sounds really nice. Also check out if there is a PDP set in that range those are nice sets. I believe there is a really nice 7 piece maple PDP for around 900 if you are wiling to save up, thats what I would do .
Buy Pacific Drums by DW X7 Maple 7-Piece Drum Shell Pack | Shell Packs | Musician's Friend Theres the PDP set

Re: Does anyone have a good reccomendation for a cheap (600 or 500) set

Elder,
Here's part of a review of it from another site. Doublecheck to make sure Guitar Center is offering all the same pieces with the kit.

"A complete drum kit with mahogany shells, heavy-duty hardware, and Sabian cymbals.

"Pearl’s entry level kit, SoundCheck, is intended to change the mindset of what an entry-level drum set should be. These Pearl drum shells are made from 9-ply mahogany and are finished in a durable high-gloss covering.

"WIth the inclusion of the Sabian B8 cymbal pack and the sturdy 700 Series hardware, this kit adds up to an entry-level set of extraordinary quality.

"Includes the Sabian B8 14HH/18 Cymbal Promo Pack includes 14″ B8 hi-hats, 18″ B8 crash/ride, plus a FREE B8 8″ splash.

Includes 700 Series hardware
This is a complete hardware pack which gives you dependable hardware for an affordable price. This package includes a bass drum pedal, snare drum stand, hi-hat stand, boom cymbal stand, straight cymbal stand, and a throne.

Now, what it comes down to is how the set sounds to you. Go play it or have someone else play it while you listen, or both. Mahogany shells are decent for a starter kit. Others may be able to evaluate the cymbals and hardware, but I can't. The bottom line is how it sounds to you.

One issue is whether you could buy a higher-quality kit used for the same money. A used mid-level kit tuned right would probably sound better and last longer. Do you have a drummer buddy who could help you look around?

Hope this helps.

I would go for a higher level drumset, the soundcheck is peals lowest level in their line. Also it's better to buy cymbals and hardware separately so you can get the exact cymbals you want and only the hardware you need. If you really like the pearl though I would say get it because your the judge

I found this tama imperialstar with cymbals and Hardware!! Buy Tama Imperialstar 5-Piece Standard Drum Set with Cymbals And Free 10" Splash | Complete Drum Sets | Musician's Friend
I know it's a little out of your price range but you will end up saving money because you will get high quality hardware and decent starter cymbals.

Buy Pacific Drums by DW M5 5-Piece Fusion Floor Drum Shell Pack | Shell Packs | Musician's Friend
Here's a nice PDP set, it doesn't have hardware or cymbals though. And it's a little out of you budget again, I'm bad at picking things out in budgets

Hey Luke,

Great recommendations! I may be a bit prejudiced, but I would vote for the TAMA Imperialstars. I checked them out when I was shopping for a new set, and really liked the work and quality TAMA has built into this set. A great affordable set for the money, and you can find really good deals if you shop around some. As for cymbals, I played the Sabian B8's for a couple of years and found them to be pretty darn good for the price. I play Sabian XS20's now, and am very satisfied. The TAMA Roadpro hardware is really bomb proof. I pack mine up and drag it around at least three or four times a month all over the southern part of the state of Idaho. To me, quality hardware is a must. I HATE dinking around with cheap hardware, especially if you are getting ready to perform. I was the spare part king until I went with the TAMA Roadpro line. Get the absolute best stuff you can afford, even if you have to save a bit more and wait a little longer.
