Question Pimp my tom

I wanted to see what it would look like to take off the outer covering on one of my toms, but after I totally dismantled it, I saw that the wrap is glued on.
Now, if I wanted to, I could take it off, but I'm not for three reasons:
1. I don't know how it will look, and will it be worth it if it looks like crap.
2. Will I be able to get the wrap back on?
3. I don't know whether it'll change the sound.
If I take the outer plastic off, it's wood underneath, and it's attached by some glue. I COULD just peel it off, and carefully sand the glue off, but will that effect the sound, or the tom in any major way? Should I just leave it alone and forget I ever had this horrifying idea? Please help

I've never done what you're contemplating, but my gut tells me that the sound has to change.
A wrapped drum just can't sound exactly the same as a wood shell. Should bring it to the true sound of the wood.

Have you got good-sounding wood?

Wow...

How about you just air brush it or put a covering over it that fits your style better?
Like DTX said, it may affect your sound just because it transforms from having a covering to a wood shell.

I remember we got one of the managers of Dixon on the forum, and not even he knew what wood my kit's made of(the Duke by Dixon). I'm not sure how it'll sound... maybe I'll just leave it.

The Duke was not the greatest kit.

Ya dtxt tell me about it. Although, it is decent for an entry level kit. I've played a CB kit, and it was crap! I hated almost everything. I'm pretty happy with my kit right now though.

Sorry, I don't want to put down anyone's kit, but the issue is whether it will sound good when taken down to the wood.

Heck, when I bought my first cymbal that didn't come with my first kit, I left the store feeling like I was on fire. It was only a Stagg or something, but what a feeling! I don't mean to put down anyone's kit.

Re: Pimp my tom

Prof. Sound says that that a wrapped kit will focus more sound out of the heads of the drum and non wrap will resonate more out of the shell. I don't think it'll make that much difference for you to remove it and you're probably better off leaving it there to retain value in trading up to your next wood finish beauty.

Re: Pimp my tom

How skilled are you at refinishing wood? I don't think it will alter the sound in a negative manner but it will certainly change it and it might always sound a little off from your other ones.

Unless you have a definite plan to change your whole kit, I would keep it stock. I've actually thought of this too, and even have some wenge and purpleheart veener to do it with. But damn, it's a lot of work and I don't want to have my toms out of commision for a week while I mess with it, lol.
