Idea for my kit.

I have a 5 Piece Pulse Percussion drum set and i hope to get new heads and cymbals for it. I play mostly rock/funk/metal What i have thought about is the following:

12", 13", 16" Evans G2 Coated Tom Batters
14" Evans ST Snare Batter
22" Evans Onyx Bass Drum Batter
12", 13", 16" Evans EC Tom Reso's
14" Evans Hazy 300 Snare Reso
Paiste PST 3 Cymbal Set (16" Crash, 14" Crash, 14" Hi Hats and 20" Ride)

My budget is about £350 ($550) so i think this would be a good setup, but what do you guys (and gals) think?

(p.s: I haven't chosen to use EC2's because i prefer coated heads and i find the G2's to be more versatile and have a deeper sound.)

I'm gonna have a stab in the dark, and assume you use Pinstripes?

And yes Paiste cymbals are the shizz.
I dream of having a full set of Alpha's

I used remo pinstipes for awhile they were ok, but then i got EVANS EC2's, much better! I have never been let down by EVANS, and your choices sound pretty good, except try out an aquarian super kick 2 for the bass drum, they are amazing, tons of punch and low end. As for cymbals I happen to be a sabian fan, try out the B8's or XS20's if you have a chance, both are good midrange-ish series

Re: Idea for my kit.

I suggest not getting a pst3 14" crash, it will be so unbelievably bright and tinny you won't be able to stand it (at least I couldn't). I am also a sabian fan, as you can see in my sig, and I would highly recommend XS20's, they're incredibly high quality for their price, but a little over your budget. So for something under them I would recommend B8's. But between your hardware for the cymbals and stands you're probably not going to get much out of your $550. Thus, I say save up another $150 or so and get the XS20's.

Only thing etter would be to save up even more and get some sabian aax or hhx, that's what I'm doing now, getting each cymbal idividually and making sure they all perfectly match each other. It may cost more but if you are planning on getting high end cymbals in the future, you might as well just get them now you will end up saving money

I despise B8's with a passion. I don't really like Sabian either, I'm always drawn to Zildjian, Paiste or Stagg. B8's are too bright and i hate the look. I love Paiste PST 3's though and i've heard them in person and on Youtube, and i like them.

Like i said above, I really do not like Sabian
I like EC2's but i don't want to get them because i can't find them anywhere where they are coated and i'm starting to think Evans don't produce them anymore. The G2's are cheaper, and they offer the deep sound and wide tuning range i need. I prefer coated over clear too. And aquarian i have never tried. I'm a big fan of Evans, so that's why i'm going with them.

For the Bass drum i'm torn between the EMAD and the Onyx because the EMAD offers a wider sound range for varying styles, but i like the attack and low resonance of the Onyx. Like i said in the initial post, i'm a rock/metal/funk kinda guy.

Re: Idea for my kit.

If you like the Super-Kick II so much, then why haven't you considered using All Aquarian Heads? They are far superior to Evans and Remo in both sound and durability. And they usually cost a little less too. My gear consist of Super-Kick IIs, Studio X's on toms, and Focus X on Snare. That's all I'll use. The quality is just SO much better. Here's a a simple test: Go to the music store and ask them for a 12" head in each model (Studio X, G2, EC2, Emperor, Pinstripe... Whatever) Hold the head vertically, by lightly gripping just the hoop only, with your fingertips. Strike the center of each one with the finger on your free hand, and listen to the inherent fundamental tone of each head. You'll find Aquarian Heads sound like actual drums, right out of the box, without even being placed on a drum. All the others sound like plastic stretched across metal, or wet cardboard. If you use heads that naturally sound good on their own, you'll be amazed at simple tuning becomes. Aquarian heads just want to sound good, you have to have to really try to make them sound bad. It's not in their nature to do so.

As for Cymbals, I've been a Paiste Endorsed Artist for over 15 years, so I'm somewhat biased. At last count, I had over 200 Paiste Signatures and Dark Energy's, and over 90 various series of Paiste Chinas, Bells, Gongs, Accents, Splashes, Effects, Prototypes, and Specialty Items, as well. For their overall quality, there's no better cymbal in the world. I was/am fortunate enough to be able to afford the play any damn thing I choose to... And it's always been Paiste. Get in touch with "The REV" on here. He's a distributor and will hook you up with a solid deal on Paiste gear. I'd sell you some of mine on the cheap if I could, but I'm contractually forbidden. I can give them away, but I can't sell them. Find "REV", he'll help you out.

As long as your on a expedition to find quality gear... Give Vater Drumsticks a look too.

Dude, i don't like aquarian. Two things in the drum world i really do not like, are Aquarian and Sabian. I didn't even mention the super kick, i was talking about evans heads, because they're more popular, sold in my local stores and i prefer them. Plus, i use Vic Firth and they are amazing quality anyway. But thanks for your input!
