Re: resonant skins

Well for me when I take off the resonants I get a very dry sound with a little more high pitched ring than normal and my lugs rattle. If you want loud, tune your batters a little higher and resonants a little lower. Or you tune them exactly the same. And last, don't use any dampening.

There are no downfalls to removing the res heads of your toms. It's a matter of taste and the sound you're looking for.

Re: resonant skins

You don't see that too much anymore, but back in the day (yup, I'm old) it used to be the rule and not the exception, part of that good-old 70's sound (Keith Moon era)... It was for a bigger sound, especially when playing small venues, drum amplification was a nightmare back then and you usually had to rely on the drums alone for volume. When you did mic them the mics were put right up in the shells because the mic's were huge, but you had to run the heads pretty loose to keep the resonant ring to a minimum through the old tube PA systems (no compressors, gates, a "tone" knob instead of an EQ, lots of feedback and shocks galore)... today amplification is a breeze, drum mic's are small and unobtrusive, drums and heads have a lot better sound, tone and volume naturally. If you want a boomy 70's sound give it a try and see what you think of it, if you don't like it then put them back on... old school baby!

Re: resonant skins

I miss the good old days. I've seen some drummers remove the res head and apply a thin coat of roofing tar in them.

Some placed a blanket and other placed a pillow.

And they were happy drummers in ht e 70's. I know, I was there.

Those drummers were the mothers of invention.

Automotive undercoating worked good to line the inside of the shells too (helped having a brother who worked in a body shop)... top them off with the old school Remo Control-Sound heads with the big black dot that was as thick as the vinyl top on a car and you're good to go.. the good old days...
