I dont know what mini emad is, but i can give you imput on moongel because i use it. Its great; It allows me to muffle a drum but not really ruin the tone as you stated. Its especially useful on my rack tom. When i hit it i get a nice intial attack, tone, and sound of the drum, but then the nasty overtones follow after that. Moongel cleared that right up for me

Just be aware that moongel tends to disintegrate after a while i.e. it REALY goes like snot and almost has to be wiped of the head. Personaly I much prefer Evans E rings.

I agree with animal.22, that's why I use muffler rings all around the kit and a Richie Ring on the snare.

The Richie Rings come in two sizes.

I use a belt muffler on the bass drums with remo pillows.

Re: moon gel or mini emad

If its tuned correctly you don't need anything dude there is a thing most good drummers have its called light and shade...moon jell is a studio aide to stop ring...dampen the whole kit and you will loose the feel...if you cant get your tuneing right i suggest a single head until you learn how to set up a kit without ring....ring is caused when the heads are fighting against each other it takes a trained ear to right that....for quickness and to stop over ring they slap a lump of latex on the head that does the job...the same effect can be obtained by slacking the top head to the lowest point of tune just before it rings and then use the bottom head to tune the pitch...you will obtain a deep rich sound that will sound amazing through any rig dude.....the other trick is roll a ball of Gaffa tape one strip of tape attach ball of tape and secure near edge of rim just saved yourself eight quid for a lump of jell....

Moongel

Rings are all or nothing.
At least with Moongels you can adjust the dampening.
Moongels are more on-the-go friendly as well.
Those rings are a pain in the ass.

...for cymbals too. Can't dampen a ride with a plastic ring.
Moongel packs are cheap too.
They're cheap enough to at least take for a spin.

Or buy a yard of felt at a fabric store for less than $5. That and a roll of gaffer tape, and you have a lifetime supply of infinitely variable dampeners for yourself and several of your drumming friends. Cut a square of felt...whatever size you want, big or small...stick it to a strip of gaffa like a bandaid, place where needed. Moongel is pretty good stuff too. I would agree with the writer who said that rigs are an "all-or-nothing" proposal. They always seemed like too much to me. I have had success using half of a ring on a low-pitched snare. I cut them out of old heads...never bought a ring. Used an exacto knife to cut it out by the curve in the head above the flesh hoop, then trim it to about an inch in width. Cut it in half, hold in place with a couple little strips of gaffa. But most of the time, the most I use is a single hunk of Moongel, or a 1-1.5" square of felt.
