Re: Snare drum sound.

Try the industry standard Remo ambassador weatherking coated, or the one I'm playing at the moment, Evans power centre reverse dot. Both heads respond really well to ghost notes, and sound good at all levels. I tune mine to produce just the right amount of 'ring', I have been using an Evans key that you can 'dial up' the desired tension. So much faster and easier to tune with (I wish I had discovered it years ago). I play mostly Funk and Jazzy pop, mixed with a bit of Trip-Hop, and I find the snare sound to be perfect. Other members in the band love it, especially the rimhots. I retained the original snare (bottom) head supplied with my Tama kit, and it seems to be a good combination.

Regards, Nigel

Re: Snare drum sound.

The last two guys had it right. You should be focussing on getting good rims that make sharp rimshots. The drummer in the original clip you showed was playing rimshots. That's how I play almost all of the time. Even if you need to play more quietly, you just play rimshots with the front tip of the stick instead of the middle section. That's how you'll get the snap you want -- especially on a chrome snare cranked tight. Instead of regular snare strokes and ghost notes, play rimshots and regular strokes to get the effect you want. I remember reading somewhere that there are different kinds of rims and one kind will give a brighter rimshot sound. I guess it's the cast iron ones that Andy B has recommended. If you've got extra cash you might want to experiment with different rims.

Re: Snare drum sound.

I went with remo controlled sound for batter side and evans hazy 200 on the reso. I also got puresound 20 strand metrix wires. With the new gear my ghost notes are beautiful sounding and the drum is very sensitive, it also has the crack that im looking for and a little bit of ring but not enough for my tastes.

I play mostly rim shots as well but im going to look in to buying some new hoops for a better sound. I also cranked it up like you recommended. Im satisfied for now but im still looking for a way to further improve the sound to my tastes.

Re: Snare drum sound.

Arrrgh. That's why I own over a dozen snare drums. Always in search of that ideal sound for each situation. When it comes right down to it, I'm pretty much "old-school" when it comes to snare drum heads. I've tried a lot of different heads over the years...my 1st paid gig was in 1972, so you know I've spent a lot of dough on heads...and I keep coming back to the good old Remo coated Ambassador on the top, clear Ambassador SS on the bottom. I can get whatever sound I need out of that combination. Each drum shell is going to be different, but beyond that, it's really just a matter of tuning, dampening, and touch.
