lug types

I bought some spare drums to use for parts---the lugs have a rubber insert instead of a spring inside---any thoughts---seems like they would move during re-head---should I use them?

Re: lug types

The idea behind the rubber is to separate the lug and its components from the shell so they will not dampen the vibration of the shell. That is why there is typically rubber between the lug and the shell as well as where the rod screws into the lug.

Anyhow, you are fine using them but if it is possible I would suggest using all of the same type on one drum, both resonant and batter sides. If you don't have enough to do an entire drum that's OK, the only time not having them all the same might become a big problem is in the recording studio.

Re: lug types

Thanks for the feedback---my kit has wrapped shells, and no gaskets---I wanted to replace the lugs without drilling, but I can't seem to find 1" hole spacing without going to tube lugs---I think I need something a little beefier for a bass drum! I have one broken lug out of 16, and I am still playing it the way it is until I figure out what to do! I have it tuned to cannon right now, and the missing lug doesn't seem to be a big problem---this is just an expensive toy right now---I don't gig, or record---I just can't stand to have broken parts on my toys!!!!
