I know almost every bass drum head has a porthole, but i've never seen a porthole in anything BUT a bass drum. would putting a porthole in a rack tom or florr tom be a good idea?

Well I have added a 4 inch hole to the reso side of my floor tom. My bass drum doesn't have a hole, but I know they are supposed to make the sound fatter and I don't know...darker, I guess. Anyways, when I did it on my Floor tom, the effect was the complete opposite. It made my drum sound papery and thin. It also resonated for like 30-40 seconds throughout my room, lol. My Floor tom previously had a growling, thick, feel to it, which I loved. But I guess that's part of drumming. Risks.
