Drum stick sizes

I think I learned this a while back but I can't seem to remember. On a drumstick, what does the number and the letter stand for? Like a 5A stick - Is 5 for the length and A for the girth? Anyone?

Check this out:

http://www.pearldrum.com/2002_techspeak/drumsticks.asp

Scroll down a bit for an explanation. Looks like these days it doesn't mean much further than identification by brand. First generation sticks used a letter and number to tell you the size and recommended application.

Sorry - I'm just repeating what's in that page, quite informative.

Wow, that's a great resource. I didn't there was so much information on drumsticks. It's like a whole new science in itself.

Oh yes!

I can really feel myself turning into a drum anorak. As Johnny 5 once said: "INPUT!".
