Evans EMAD or Aquarian SuperKick II ?

I'm trying to decide which bass drum head to get next. I've noticed that the bass drum head makes a huge difference in the sound. I'm really looking for that boomy sound. Anyone have any experience with this? Which would you choose and why?

Im a remo powerstroke 3 man. They sound so nice, expecially with Falam Slam patch on em'. Thats the best bass head in my opinion.

I've heard that Remo's quality has dropped over the years. Do you use a pillow in the bass with that head? Also, what kind of beater do you use?

I have a pillow in my drum, I use a standard pacific beater on the felt side. And it just produces the best bass drum tone ever. I play with a double bass pedal so I didnt want anything terribly boomy, but its not a "thud" sound either.

I know a lot of drummers who don't use any pillow at all and still get an awesome sound out of the bass drum. Not too boomy or echoy either. Does that have to do with the head you think?

Alot of its in the way you tune it. Of course the emads have the muffling ring which eliminates the need for a pillow. I have it to where the sounds just a quick "doom!" and I like it like that. Of course the metal players like to get a click sound out of their bass drum. Its just a balance between tuning, and what heads you have on it.

Thanks for the advice. Tuning is definitely a huge part of getting the right sound.

Have you tried the other heads other than Remo? What do you think some of the main differences are? They're alll pretty high quality I'm guessing.

If you're looking for a "BOOMY" sound, I suggest you to look at Aquarian SuperKick I instead on the Superkick II. It will give you the best compromise between boom & thump. The SKII is two ply heads which reduce the boominess & resonance of the head. Also match it with Aquarian regulator reso for better performance.

if you will get a nice thick front head with somthing like a remo power stroke 3 you dont need any muffling at all adn you can get a nice booming deep bass sound out of it without the echo but one thing to add to that is also the quality of the wood.

both of my bass drums are made out of diffrent wood, one is phillpino pine and the other is birch.
the pine dosnt sound so good without the muffling but the birch sounds fantastic without muffling.

I hope that helps out a lot
