Oh my god ! If you're denting head so easily, you must play really hard, maybe too hard ! You wont get better sound even if you hit hard, in fact listen to pro drummer like Gadd, Weckl, Coluata, Aronoff etc... They never beat the hell of their drums and they obtain the best sound out of their drums. Maybe it's time to review your technique...

Sheesh~ You boys hit too hard...
I don't think I could dent a drum if I wanted to..
And I guess that's a good thing!

For the record, my teacher is always telling me I need to play harder, and I have never dented a drum.

When your teacher tells you to play harder, he doesn't mean to try and put dents in your heads. What he probaly means is that you need to be more aggressive. Attack those notes, accent them if you have to. Let your drum sticks bounce and let the head resonate to the fullest to produce the sharpest and cleanest sound possible.

I think that your drum instructor used the wrong choice of words in that case. A lot of times when people play "harder" they tend to drag and play heavy. That's never a good thing in percussion.

It wasn't my instructor that said "harder". He said basically what you did, and I knew I shouldn't play so hard that I'm denting heads.
