something I kinda found buy acedent one day was reading product reveiws on musicans friend.
in case you dont know where it is, it's when you click on a product down below all the product info there is comments about the product that people have left about it.

looking thru some of those some people have bought drum heads from one bradn to the next and some of them have cut the reso holes in them and some heads I guess sound better with them and some sound really bad with them so I would say that might be a good starting point for resurch if you are thinking about cutting one in yourself, because you might mess up a good head.

I would also say that a lot of the companys know a lot about what they are doing as well and they will offer the the heads that sound best to them with the reso holes already cut in them but that dosnt mean that you cant cut one in your head and it will sound great.

Interesting. So what kind of bass drum heads sound good with reso holes in them? Ones that are 2 ply, dampener rings, etc?

Re: Bass drum head reso hole, yes or no?

Hello there!

I will also add that it varies from drummer to drummer. Some drummers prefer a lot of tone and resonance, thusly leaving the reso. head untouched/uncut. In all honesty though, it really is about how much attack and definition you want your bass drum to have. The bigger the hole, the less resonance and the more attack you'll get from your bass drum. Right now, I have an uncut reso. head, but I'm considering installing a small 4" port hole for micing purposes and to get just a little extra definition to my sound.

As for installing the holes yourself, I wouldn't recommend trying to freehand it. Check out musiciansfriend.com in the sticks/heads/accessories section; they usually have stuff from Remo or Aquarian, etc. They make templates that are basically round stickers; you stick it on the front head wherever you feel like it should be and then you cut the inside of it out with an exacto knife or something like it. Make sure to take the head off of the bass drum when you do this. I watched a friend try to install a port hole while there was still tension on the head once: although the end result was really funny to watch, there is still a tapestry of obscenity hanging somewhere in the mix of space and ozone over Lander, WY as a direct result, and the new head was pretty expensive.

I hope this helps.

Ive had a port cut in our CB700, and now the church has out new taye set,and today i am going to put a port into the head for mike purposes because we have a sound booth, and
we want everything tight.I bought an port maker from Aquarius its cost around $8 dollars
All you do is put the head on the kick drum(or bass) and put that little circle on it and just cut
it out. oh i forgot draw a circle and then cut. It takes away so much over ring from the kick.
