drums with or with out resonant heads?

I have noticed over the years many drummers don't use resonant heads on their drums.I personally perfer them not only for the sound of the drum but how it looks. What do you perfer?

I think the resonant drum heads are really important in bringing out the right sound in the drums. It gives off a fuller sound that resonates more. Having just the batter head makes the drum sound dry and dull. The Pearl Rhythm Traveler is a good example of that.

It's just a different sound, is the way I look at it. I grew up in an era when concert toms were commonplace (the 1970s), and I did have my drums set up like that for a while many years ago, but it's not generally the sound I want on my drum set. However, I've used concert toms many times in other contexts, specifically in orchestras, percussion ensembles, and wind ensembles back when I was a college student. It's tricky to get a good sound out of them, IMO, but it can be done.

I think you lose a lot of tone with out the reso head. I used to like the idea of that, but since I learnt how to tune I prefer them on.

I love reso heads but at the same time I have heard toms with out them sound great but they were alway very deep (im sure thats what you mean by concert toms)

most of the time though like on a fusion kit unless you are going for that high pitch tom sound they sound really bad.

Resonator heads sound bad on a fusion kit? Hmmmm I better take mine off then. LOL I use Aquarian Classic Clear resonators on the bottom of all of my toms. My set is a Tama StarClassic fusion set but you'd never know it when it's played. It's very deep sounding for such a short shell. I can easily pull off Godsmack and Dream Theater with a fusion set. It's all in the tuning. (oh yeah ..... and the double kick pedal!)
