i'm a perfectionist so sometimes I can go for days at a time just tuning my drumset. It's really a pain in the ass because i gotta do it pretty often. How long doese it take you?

I spend maybe 3 or more hours tuning my drums initially and then I check up on them a couple minutes whenever I play so they don't get too out of tune.

Between 5 to 10 minutes per drum so I have 5 toms + 1 bass drum and 3 snares ... maybe an hour and half

The only time it ever takes me a while is when I first put on new drum heads and that can take a little while but I can usealy do it in about 2 min per drum.
snare maby a little longer because there is so many diffrent varbles with snare in the music you are playing, and of course that is where owning multiple snares comes in really handy.

I know on rushs last tour neil peart toured with 16 snares.

I'm really lazy about tuning my drums, but usually it only takes me about 5 minutes to tune my 3 toms and snare, it takes I while for the bass drum. I guess if I really wanted to tune my drums up and make them sound nice I could, but I just don't really feel like it because no one has ever said to me "man that drum sounds pretty bad" and usually I get compliments on my snare sound. Also if you don't like tunning drums somewhere out there some company made drum lugs that have like rubber down one side, its really weird but they say that you can go a long time without tunning. I'll try and find out more info and post it up here.

I usually get all pumped up about tuning my drums and making them sound perfect. However, once I start and can't get the sound I want after countless hours, I get really discouraged and just settle for whatever. After that, I just do whatever that minimum is I need to do to make my drums sound decent.

Im the same way man. It takes me days sometimes to get em how I like em.
I always wanna be sure the sound projecting outward from the kit is good as opposed to the sound from behind the kit. Makes me crazy sometimes cuz I cant stand for my drums to sound crappy. I need to chk that tuning bible too!

My fastest would have to be an hour, quite sketchy though, so I redid it in 2 hours. Man time can fly...

I just recently bought a book online from www.tadrums.com just on a chance. It turns out, this book(at least for me) is a gold mine. The author is a drummer/engineer/drumtech and has written the book in a very easy to understand way. After reading through the book twice, the first time I attempted to tune my churches set of pearl brx's... it worked like a charm and the drums sound wonderful. And no damping was used. No ridiculous "boing-oing-oing" sound, just great tom sound. The author also pointed out ways to get rid of that annoy empathetic snare buzz. What a relief that was!
