Attack Drum heads

The big drum head companies are Remo, Evans, and Aquarian but has anyone tried Attack heads and actually prefer them over the other brands? I know Terry Bozzio endorses these but how good are they?

I've got Attack medium-weight clear heads on my toms (batter and reso) and I'm happy with the sound. I've also got Attack single-ply coated heads on one or two of my snare drums, and they're OK. The coated heads strike me as being a bit thicker than single-ply coated heads from Aquarian, Remo, or Evans, which is good on some drums, not so good on others. The snare side heads are OK, but are a bit too thick for my tastes.

I think Attack heads are better than most drummers think they are, but all things being equal, I'd rather have Aquarian heads on my kit.

Did you get those heads just to experiment or did you get those because they make the sound better on the specific drums you specified?

I bought them for my toms, because I wanted to try clear heads top and bottom on them, and there was a good sale on Attack heads at that point in time. I only had one set of comparable (medium weight, clear) Remo Ambassadors for one of my toms, but I wanted to set 'em all up with the same head combination and see what I thought. Frankly, tho, on these drums at least, the Attacks sound just as good as the Remos.

However, I didn't buy them "blindly" - I had tried Attack heads on snare drums before, and I was satisfied with the quality. Additionally, the drummer I hire to play with my jazz vibes trio, has Attack coated heads on his toms, and his drums sound great with them. Based on those previous (successful) examples, I decided to roll the dice and try the Attacks for my toms.

In terms of snare drums, I tend to like Aquarian heads better than Attacks, so I'm tempted to go Aquarian when the time comes to replace the heads currently on my toms. On the other hand, tho, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" - I'm happy enough with the sound of the Attacks to at least consider buying them again when I replace tom heads. I'll cross that bridge when I come to it.

It's great that you really experiment with different things even if it isn't the norm. I'm sure you find a lot of things that other people miss out on.

As for me, I like to stick by your phrase, "If it aint broke, dont fix it". I like to keep true to the more trusted drum head brands like Evans and don't really like to venture out and experiment with drum heads from other lesser known brands.
