well I would have to say that you are kinda answering part of your question.
if you are looking for somthing cheap then it probably wont be that good.

when I was playing metal I was using the remo weather king heads and the remo powerstroke 4 and I would get a good month out of both of them and they would still hold there tone pretty well.

I think the key to this is to rember that the drumis only going to go so loud and that is it, it isnt going to get any louder and I am here to tell you that hitting it normal will get you the sound that you need if you have the right snare. it will cut thru the music.

I think sometimes they are, I didnt have a whole lot of luck with evens but there are a lot of people on here that use them and swear by them.
I dint think that heads are all that much anyways unless you are going thru them a lot.

Ok, I'm not saying anything about the different head companies as I don't want to start an arguement over it. As for the coated situation, that's tough as I use coated heads and never have had a problem with them ( Aquarian Focus X Coated on snare and Aquarian Studio X coated on toms) but a friend of mine who's style is much different then mine, took the coating off every head he has ever tried in 2 days!!! (all from different manufacturers) It's due to the fact he plays sitting very low and the toms and snare are at such an angle that the very tip of the stick sort of slides on the heads thus removing the coating as it scratches over the surface. Not to mention he hits harder than I do.

Not that I have a lot of experience with heads...but I need mine replacing; I've been using the same heads for a year (yeah, they are worn out) I got the stock skins so they aren't particularly special..

But I was browsing around remo's site a week or so ago, and I absolutely love the look of the Ebony Pinstripes...

They've got that unique black look; so they make your kit look quite awesome...but I know it's the sound you're interested in..

The Ebony Pinstripes are aparently suited for Rock and R&B 'cause they give that cool dark thud sound; and it says they can take a beating too...

So I'd say, look at the ebony series; even if you aren't going to get pinstripes, the ambassadors look good too ^^

Focus-X are a good choice. I have been to so many different theatres and didn't have to change heads for the size of the room. These heads are awesome for the price. Also got rid of the moon gel. Studio's are an excellent choice too! I will never go back to remo.

But unfortunately I just had a stroke last June at the age of 45 and have no left arm right now. Maby I can fill in for Def Leppard? Ha Ha!

As far as the right heads for the right music goes, I honestly don't think there is such a thing. It realy all depends on your preferance.

My advice, pick the drummer whose sound you want to emulate and find out what they're playing.
