what kind of snare do you have?I mean, you can't make a crappy snare sound like a Black Beauty. There are some cheap snares that sound great.Like this one...http://www.amazon.com/Groove-Percuss.../dp/B0002XL6M6.

i have a wood sonor snare, made on the 80's (its an 80's kit). It's alright, but i'd like it to be like this 1 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FgBlHM5TW5Q

or like danny carey's cause hese my favorite, and it spunds really nice.

Sonor snare

To make it sound like the one in the video--just teach it to play at 300 miles an hour.
Now to be serious---Can you tell us more about the problem.
What don't you like?
1. Is it too ringy?
2. Too dead??
3. How old are the heads??
4. What Brand of heads are on it?
5. How do you tune it??
6. How are the snare wires?

In listen to that Video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FgBlHM5TW5Q I would assume its a Yamaha snare. Very tight sound nice crack, nice projection. It sounds like a 14 x 6.5, probably maple. Can't tell though. Yamaha make awesome drums. Though not my preference.
The dynamic in a snare is determined by the shell, the hardware and the heads.( I am sure you knew this, this is for the up n commers)

Without your dimensions its impossible to suggest heads.
