Trying to decide on a new snare head

The time has come for new snare head(s). I was thinking Evans ST dry and Evans Glass500 on the snare side. I am trying to achieve a really dry, sharp CRACK! with minimal overtones. The snare I have is the Joey Jordison signature. I understand that a metal snare will always "ring" a little, I'm just trying to keep it to a minimum.

Joey signature snare is a 13" right? Unfortunately being that little bit smaller and cast aluminium I think will reduce your crack a bit. Joey's sound is a bit more high pitched punch.

I've been using evans power centre (which is used by Danny Carey) and it's been great, but I think you might be right on the money with the ST.

And If you're realy trying to cut that ring down, I'd definately consider getting a dicast hoop for the batter side. This will give you much more control with tuning as they don't flex as much between the lugs.

I used the Evans power centers for a while, but wanted more CRACK! so I went to an Evans genera HD dry, they wear slower and give a great dry snap for metal drumming.

I ended up with the Evans HD Dry, and it's exactly what I'm looking for. Damn snare sounds like a .40 cal pistol next to the metal wall of an empty water tower. (Don't ask me how I know what that sounds like, but believe me, I have heard it) It's a really loud/sharp POP with a metalllic tone underneath it. Wow.

Great news man. I love it when new gear comes together. I'll have to try out one of those next time.

What snare do you use? I was listening to "Razorwire" on your myspace page, and that snare of yours really cut through the music.

Glad to hear somone checking out my stuff.

14 x 6.5, Pearl, brass. free floating snare with fat cats (multi tension) wires.

Yeah, it's got a huge sound. It was thrown in with my second kit coz it's pretty rusty and old, but its still as solid as ever.

Need a new hoop for it though. My current di-cast hoop must be as old as the snare and it's warped all over the place. Too much excessive ringing that I can't get rid of.

I'm trying to make it sound something like John Dolmayan's bell brass in Toxicity.

Awesome man...I had the same experience with the same head about 2 years ago.I was using a Pearl Omar Hakim 13x5 and was not happy with...I think it was a coated Aquarian with a dot...was told to try the HD and was blown away when I heard it.Awesome head for metal,I won't use anything else.Good choice sir!

Evans

You nailed it!!!!
Evans once had what was called a CADCAM. Not sure if it is still available. This was THE most amazing head for a snare and you could put it on anything and I mean anything and it sounded awesome. Played everything from jazz to blood and I swear on the biggest stack of leather bound bibles it was the most amazing head.
So guess what I use today.....with a 300 hazy for a reso....
