Which Drum Heads.

Hey,

I got my buddy's old kit, and I wanted to get some new heads for it. I have no clue where to start with these. So I was wondering if you guys could suggest something. I play like rock/metal/punk...so Disturbed, Avenged Sevenfodl, Pantera, Billy Talent..

Also, I have a 14" floor tom from my old kit, if i put the same type of head, will the sound likely match this new kit?

Thanks

I suggest searching the head manufacturer sites for clues. Aquarian, Evans, Remo which will get you into a ball park and then eliminate. Also depends on the condition of bearing edges and drum shells what they will sound like, and whether the orphan will match in too.
There are no rules and there is nothing wrong with having different heads to get your orphan to fit in or get a signature sound, same as cymbals.
For the type of music it is likely hard hitting stuff, and likely not too fat but loud? I would possibly use two plys like Emperors for batters and single ply for resonants, probably use clear heads to help cut through if normal playing is at full noise? If you wanted dampening look at heads with tone rings. Only an opinion.

Thumbs up

I use what could be described as industry standard heads..ie:
Remo Powerstroke 3 Bass...Remo Pinstripes on Toms and Remo Ambassadors on my two Snares.
But its all a matter of taste.......

try remo pinstripe, my batters are all pinstripes,(except snair, jupiter head, 16" floor tom, out of money, and bass, like the sound) they make kinda a splooshy sound, but i recomend spending the money on the snair heads, they are used more frequently, at least for now.

also pinstripe's(clears) cost is cheep too.

for a great example ckick on his "photo bucket" picture.

Find out what your idols use. Vinnie Paul (for example) uses the classic, g2 batter, g1 reso combination from evans. So does Danny Carey, Brandon Barnes (Rise Against), Sevendust, Bad religion and the dude from avenged sevenfold. I played pinstripes for years, moved onto emps and still wasn't happy with the sound. Now that I've got g2's, I'm a very happy man and I also predominantly play punk and metal.

Cool, what type of music do you play? And are they a bit more pricy?

In my previous post I was refering to toms only. Snairs and bass drums are a lot more of an individual sound. I personally use the the evans power center at the mo' but a lot of guys here swear by the genera dry so I might try that next time.

As for bass drums, my vote goes to the evans emad. Although I don't own them (coz they're quite pricey) I have tried them and they are awesome. Most pros' on evans use them too. Right now I'm useing Remo powerstroke 3 on my basses and they have served me well for a long time.
