Replacing skins

I'm looking to replace the skins on my toms (10" 12" and 14") and my snare (14"). My bass drum has currently got a Remo CS skin on it, as the original broke many moons ago. I'm pretty happy with the bass drum skin, it give a pretty nice defined sound thats good for rock and metal for a pretty good price.

I was wondering, should I go with the Remo CS skins on the toms? I haven't given any thought to what I would use for the resonant side, so does anyone have any suggestions?

I'm on a pretty tight budget atm, so yeah, value for money is definitely what I'm looking for.

Depends entirely what sound you are after. An open sound or a closed sound.
Check out the Aquarian site and comparison chart to get an idea.

As for price, between the 3 major manufacturers, the prices are going to be similar what ever you do. I'd stick with any of the big three, Evans, Remo, Aquarian, they all make decent drum heads.

I'm sorry for my complete newbishness, but what exactly do you mean by open or closed sound? Is that like how long is resonates? I play mainly metal, so I want punchy toms that can cut through other instruments a bit, if that makes sense.

Most Metal drummers ive seen play use Evans G1 or 2 batter head(weird new head on the back side of all the evans boxes, similar to pinstripes),I use Remo Pinstripes, pistripes are Wet sounding, with a hard hit it sounds perfict in metal.

The evans g2's are not an expensive batter skin, but a lot of rock players use them. I use them because I found the remos went dead too fast. If you check out the evans site, you'll see the number of drummers who use the g2 batter/g1 reso combination. It's pretty popular and I thouroughly recommend it. Big attack, smooth release.

Open sounding heads are like loud, ringy, clear and musical.
Closed sounds are those heads with some form of muffling which chokes the sound some. Heads with coatings, tone rings, etc, will reduce overetones and help punchiness but not necessarily projection unless miked up or played hard.

I think it better to buy heads to suit the style of music you play rather than a head choice that you have to muck around muffling with in whatever form you use.

The site below sort of explains, always consider that a head is the biggest factor to any drum sound and that the sound coming out front of the kit is different to what you hear from the throne.

Hope of some help?
