Re: evans hydraulics, who has played 'em?

yeah ive have haudralic blues on my toms.

and i guess theyre allright. they have a really fat and wet sound.

i really dont like this sound n e more soo im probably just going to get evans G2 coated.

but over all they last a long time and are very durable. theyre sortof hard to tune at first but u get it after a while.

the only draw back i have with em is theres not alot of projection. but mics solve that prob

I have used the heads your asking about and they are hard to tune and I have never liked them on high end kits. I use Evans G2 clear now on my toms and the sound is much better. Of coarse I used the hydraulics on a different Kit (A Rogers Kit, Pearl Export) I have a Pearl Reference now. I have put Evans G2 clear on the Export a couple of months ago and low and behold it sounds better. So I would try themand see if you like them. As far as tuning I would tune them like all drums.

Re: evans hydraulics, who has played 'em?

I've had 'em and played on 'em...never did care for them. They are just too dead for my taste. BUT HERE'S A STORY!

I was playing at a hotel in Kansas City back in the 80's, when I was approached by an older gentleman. He introduced himself as Bob Beales, president/owner of Evans, at that time based in Dodge City (yes, that Dodge City) Kansas. He told me about how the Hydraulics came to be. Back in the olden days, before the Hydraulics, Evans had a 2-ply clear head, that was doing pretty well in the rock'n'roll marketplace. It seems that Bob was over in Europe doing an A&R tour, and guys kept coming up to him and saying "Hey Bob! I sure like those oil-filled heads!" And Bob would just kind of nod knowingly, say "thanks", and then think "what the heck are they talking about?...we don't make an oil-filled head." Then it occured to him that when you look at a 2-ply head, light refracts through where the plies contact each other, creating the appearance of an "oil" layer in between! And he thought "if they want an oil-filled head, I'll give 'em an oil-filled head!" When he got back home to Kansas, he got out a towel and took it to the assembly line, soaked it with light machine oil, and placed it so that when the plies of mylar came off of the roll, they passed over the towel and picked up a coating of oil. Voila! Oil-filled heads! I'm sure there must be more to it now, but that's what Bob Beales told me.

Play on.

My opinion on the heads are that they would be to dead for me, however, if you are going for a very low volume/ring on your drums, then they are perfect. I know a couple of drummers that use them. The dude from disturbed uses them and i think the dude from antigony but i could be wrong.
