beginning drummer help

My daughter is 12 and 2nd year of band. Looking to buy reasonable enough drum set. Ludwig ok? Should I stay away from Fender/squire new at $399 if Ludwig used at $499 available or new Ludwig at $699, both with cymbals? Also, we live in country and she'll be in basement. Is it definitely worth putting up with noise instead of getting electric? Thanks for feedback! Patti

Re: beginning drummer help

I prefer acoustic sets myself...cheaper and just are nicer personally. If you can find a good set around town for a good price get it and don't look back :P Decent starter brands off the top of my head go from...ludwig, yamaha, pule, pearl, sonor(the force series), ddrum is ok...not a favorite until you look at their higher end kits though, mapex has decently priced sets, and pdp/dw For starting though, yea, don't spend over $500 unless you somehow know for sure she'll stick with playing set.

The used Ludwig set sounds like a good deal with cymbals, what model Ludwig is it? Nothing wrong with looking used for a set. I also (if you don't have to worry about neighbors) would go acoustic also. There are a lot of decent starter sets by various manufacturers as Shazaam mentioned, but you can probably get an equal or better set for money going used.

Re: beginning drummer help

acoustic defininetey....and ludwig yes... my mom bought me my ludwig set when i was 8 and to this day i still have it and it's extremely tough and ruggad.....ive gigged it and taken it with me to various places, also... like church drummer said you canm get a way better set if you go used... if you buy something like pulse, or sonar for 500 you could get a wayyy better set for 500 used... and who cares if there are a few dings or scratches... .overall the set will be better. Also.... like i said.. .go with the acoustic.. its a much better feel, and i believe that in order to be well-rounded in your craft you need to be able to know how to care for an acoustic set.

Re: beginning drummer help

Purchasing a kit can be a daunting task. My best recommendation is if you know a musician already who you trust, that isn't a drummer, they will most likely be able to get you to a knowledgable person.

We have a store called Music-go-round... it is great for second hand kits... however when buying used you need to check the instrument... Having a knowledgable drummer go with you for the purchase is your best scenario.

My best advice is go ahead and prusue information here at this site and at this web site Buying Drums

DON'T GET AN ELECTRIC. I think that instead of a ludwig, you should get a purl. I think that if you tell her what times she can and cant play, the neighbors wont even notice her.
