How do I adjust my double bass pedal?

Ok yea the title sounds a bit noobish but I already know HOW to adjust the pedal but I want to know exactly what each feature does.

I have DW 7002 Double Pedals and I've been toying around with the adjustments for a few days. I want to know what Spring Tension and beater height do exactly for the pedal. Like what kind of feeling would it make if I tightened the spring tension all the way, or if I loosened it all the way because I dont notice a difference when I change it. I also dont know what I should do with my beater heights.

Re: How do I adjust my double bass pedal?

Spring tension brings the beaters closer/pedal down, i tmakes teh "kick back" of teh pedal or whatever you wanna call it, so there's pressure bringing the beater back away from the drum. Lossened it basically puts all teh motion on momentum, but lets you kick harder...but it's pointless to loosen it alot cause then the beater will either stay against the head or will come back and rest on your foot :P
Beater hight...higher the beater means it'll travel further inturn getting more speed/power. The higher it is, the more potential it has to create power, lower, the less potential it has. I liek mine between the middle and it's max height.
The cams..least that's what I'ma call em, where you can adjust the pedals angle away from teh drum/towards your foot or closer to the head also deals with teh potential to create more power and get a louder hit, further the more potential, closer the lower the potential.
Hope that explains it for ya

Re: How do I adjust my double bass pedal?

Adjusting the pedal can be a real experience. I have a 7002 DW bass pedal and I have found that for starters I have everything in the middle IE: spring tention, and cam adjustment. I make sure that both of my peddals are the same for both feet.
The Slotted Stroke Adjustment allows infinite beater angle adjustment and the ball-bearing rocker reduces friction.
I have my beater about where there is 1/4"showing on the bottom. Work from there and play for awhile. Them make some simple adjustments and play for awhile. You will see what works best for you.

Good Luck,

Re: How do I adjust my double bass pedal?

I have a Pacific 602, on a 20" bass drum, since I have the drum frame I also have the pedal c-clamped down to the footboard to prevent any movement.

I ended up replacing the spring since I felt like it did NOTHING but go from way too much give down to no tension at all. Since replacing with something stronger I have noticed that everything
is more fluid and the pedal stays with my foot better. Nice rebound from the spring.

I don't think your question is noobish at all... I have yet to find a site that goes into any detail
on bass pedal adjustments and what they do.

Also, try keep both beaters equal. Hold both up to your bass head, and let em' go evenly, they should in theory move together if they're equal in ..well everything.

Re: How do I adjust my double bass pedal?

Yea for the past few days I've been trying to get them exactly equal but its really hard. The slotted stroke adjustment is actually harder to set than a regular 3 stroke adjustment. It is harder to get both beaters at equal angle.

I tried setting the angle the same as my first single pedal which was surprisingly close, but on these pedals its too close and barely comes back off the head. Its very hard getting these pedals the same AND getting them so they feel good. My friend has gibraltar double pedals with a nylon strap drive and with barely any adjustment it works perfect for me. I really dont know what my problem is, I cant locate which one of the adjustments is the problem.

Re: How do I adjust my double bass pedal?

yea it is really...really hard to get "lower end" pedals equal. I use pearl p122tw and have gotten them decently equal. Being my left foot is the slower foot I set my right side first, make it comfy and amazing, then just get the left side as close as possible and make my left side live with teh tension and bounce back :P
As far as strap based pedals go...I have an old pearl pedal that uses a leather strap...favorite pedal ever It was my first pedal and when teh strap broke, lol, duct tape fixed it just like new :P Did that a couple times until I got my new set which is when I switched to chain driven pedals...dunno if I'd wanna go back to straps.

Re: How do I adjust my double bass pedal?

Depends on the construction of the pedal and all.

Take a few moments and read up at this site
Pearl Educational Resource Library

Probably the best guide I have seen on bass drum pedal adjusting.
