Drum rack help!

Hey guys, I am new to the forum, and I thought the best way to get advice was to make a thread. Okay, I am also new to the drum rack purchase thing. So far, I am looking at:

This PDP rack has no bad reviews, but if I try to google other reviews there are no references, also it seems as though no place carries extra clamps in stock? I could be wrong:

Buy Pacific Drums by DW Chrome Plated Main and Side Rack Package online

Or this for $150 incl shipping somewhere else:

Buy Gibraltar Basic V Rack online at Musician's Friend

With:

Buy Gibraltar V-Rack Side Bar Extension online at Musician's Friend

So this is what I am looking to mount: cow bell, my yamaha power v special kit with three toms (12", 13", 16" - for now, possibly adding export or tama 14" and 10" soon), a 20" B8 ride, sabian aaxplosion 18" 16" 15" crashes, 15" sabian aax dark crash, 15" aax chinese, the pulse pro roto toms (6",8",10") from musiciansfriend, and I think thats about it for now.

I have heard much about the slipping problem but that the memory locks solve that problem so I'm not really worried about it. I am also wondering if theres much of a difference between the curved rack and the v rack, it seems almost as if the curved rack has more mounting space but the v rack is claimed to be ergonomic and you are better able to mount your toms closer? That's about it, I am not worried too much about the price difference ($270 for gibraltar vs $399.99 for the pdp), I am more concerned about construction, functionality, availability of extra clamps and such etc. ANY help is much appreciated! Sorry for the super long post :P

PdP, I recomend to not have it shiped to you, $$$, try your closest music store, and ask for tips... I have seen 6 pieces with out racks before, I never have my 7 piece together now that i have my rack, working on the pics!

Re: Drum rack help!

Thx for the advice, I was leaning more toward pdp, the only thing is the gibraltar rack would turn out to be less money but in the long wrong I suppose the pdp rack would be an investment. I'll have to look more into buying extra clamps and go from there :P And musicians friend I believe does free shipping? So its not sooo bad. My local music store (long and mcquade) has it priced for me for $545 and thats $145 difference than musicians friend obviously, and I found another site pricing it at $349

Re: Drum rack help!

Have you considered using a spanner rack? One that connects to two existing stands to create a drum rack.

Re: Drum rack help!

I thought about using the spanner system, but the problem I believe would be is that my cymbal stands wouldnt be able to handle the pressure of what I plan on adding to my kit down the road, aka I would eventually out grow the spanner system you know? My cymbal stands hold up just fine with cymbals, but I've clamped a tom to one of my stands before and it slowly started to form a dent over time.

Re: Drum rack help!

May I recomend the pearl dr-80. I've previously had three toms, six cymbals, hi-hats and roto-toms mounted on mine and it's held up great. Plus it's the lony one on the market that can fold up when you're done with it. I've owned gibrlater in the past and trust me, the folding is a godsend, very heavy in your hardware bag.

The basic rack comes with three sections but you can add on more. It also comes with 4 clamps ( I think it's "5/8, whatever the pearl size is), but new clamps are pretty cheap and for $10 more you can buy the universal ones.

Have a look into it. Might save your bank and your back.

I used to own the DR-80 as well. Wonderful system. You would think it might limit you being square bars... but really it was so simple and perfect. I just might go that direction again. I loved how easy it was to fold and manipulate. It was the quickest set up I have ever had.
