Ahead Lars Ulrich Drumsticks

I've been reading reviews on these drumsticks and I was gonna give them a try. Anyone know if there worth it? There are 30 bucks but I have heard people don't like the sound of them when hitting cymbals, it doesn't give that natural sound. Im sick of all damn sticks breaking and chipping and I did some research and came across these. Any thoughts?

Re: Ahead Lars Ulrich Drumsticks

I don't know about his brand... size weight and all.
The ahead sticks compared to other sticks feel different in size. So a 5a wood and 5a ahead are much different in feel/weight.

I bought a set of ahead sticks once... the actual metal shaft lasted about 2 1/2 months before I cracked it. I wasn't crazy about the cymbal sounds produced but it was acceptable. All in all I'd never purchase them again. They felt great when hitting the drums but were too expensive to maintain. Plus you can't flip them and use the butt end.

I have the Joey Jordinson on order..How did you crack aluminum? You must really wail on them.

Well yes, and no...

I play many styles of music from improv jazz to metal.... I have no interest in speed metal though. I have just recently switched to oak sticks because I was splitting my hickory ones right down the grain. Usually it starts with a little chip on the tip and then only a matter of time before I feel the stick give. I play about 90% of my snare as rim shots usually my ghost notes are more toward the center of the snare. I really enjoy the sound because depending on how much stick you give the rim shot it changes the sound.

When the music calls for it I will play gently... otherwise I adopted a philosophy long ago which was hitting it like you mean it. Drums are such a stress reliever for me and when I can really lay into the drums it feels good. I do have some drumming in this forum somewhere if you want to check it out.

I wouldn't get aluminum tips for one main reason--you don't want to strike a cymbal with metal. If the metal tip is soft enough to not damage the cymbal, then it will mark it with aluminum---maybe too small to really see it, but when you put two dissimilar metals in contact with each other and they remain you get electrolysis which causes oxidation and accelerated corrosion---bad for cymbal bronze...

Re: Ahead Lars Ulrich Drumsticks

I have been using the nylon tips (I have never seen aluminum tips). Yes I have to agree that the sound of the cymbals are a little different. I paid approx. $30 for them but in my opinion have been well worth it. I take the sleeves off and inspect them occasionally and everything is still good ( no cracks etc.) I have been using them for about a year and a half now and to this day no problems. I now perfer the Ahead sticks over the wooden sticks and I have only spent $30 bucks.

Good luck
