What drum head for metal, and rock... (brief!)

I have G1 res heads, I have had pinstripe clears in the past... I like the sound they give with G1s... I want something new, I was looking at these

Pinstripe: $19 (clear)
EC2 also: $19
Ebony Pinstripe: $21
The high that drum playing gives you: priceless... (a joke from a commercial)

If you are considering a change what is it about your current setup that you don't like?

I guess its hard to tune, at sometimes (then again I now have 2 random Aquarians on my 10 and 14") but i know two drummers who have at least had the Ec2s on their kits.

I have a bias for Evans, they make good quality heads, and I like supporting them for that.

Finally I guess this could answer the question, I got board of the pinstripes look, and I don't think I ever got the sound I want out of them.

Good enough. There are several nice mixes...

G2 batter with a G1 reso sounds good.
I am using a EC2 batter and G2 batter as a reso. Nice sound from the toms with overtones killed for the most part. Plus having the G2 as a reso for my floor tom makes it have a low sound thud that is OH-SO-NICE.

I am a heavy hitter when called for... that being said I used a G2 batter and a G1 reso combination for a good year with the heads looking at me for more abuse. If you go with a resonant head smaller than 10mil it shortens the resonance a bit. That is good if you want the toms restricted... 10 mil seems to be pretty standard now.

If you want a warm jazzy sound get some coated tops and clear 6 mil bottoms...
If you want a more generalized sound go for the G2 and G1 combo
If you want some low thud with solid tone do the EC2 with G2 combo.

If you have time go to the Evan's web site. They have charts to figure out what sound you are looking for and what head to buy.

A side comment to drum heads... I used pinstripes back in the day as well. I wasn't too happy with the sound Remo was giving me. I LOVED their ambassador/diplomat combo on the snare... but for toms and bass they were lacking with all the head styles I tried. I gave aquarian a try and thought they sounded good. When I switched to a set of Evans I fell in love with them. Every type of head I tried I got a good sound from... they held up.... I couldn't be more pleased. It will be a cold day before I switch back to any other brand of head.
