I have kids and don't get to play as often as I would like... so that worked out to me breaking about four sticks a month. I would be buying about 3 pair a month. At roughly $10 a pair that adds up quickly in the monthly budget.
For about the same price I bought a pair of 5A and 5B
promark oak sticks. I have put at least 20+ hours on each pair and the tips are in perfect condition. The shaft of the sticks are dented all to hell from the rim shots though.
This isn't the first time I have played oak sticks. I don't think I have ever broke a pair of oak sticks... ever. I usually throw them away when I lose stick definition from the tips wearing down. I had one pair that lasted two years before I threw them away. When I was in High School I eventually convinced my band instructor to let me bring my own sticks (the oak pair) because i was breaking the marching sticks every other performance. I prefer the feel of oak now that I am playing them again. They are more solid... they don't bend and vibrate the heck out of my hand. They tire my hands out quicker since the vibrations are transfered to my hands more so than to the stick... but I hold my sticks pretty loose and hardly notice.
