Hi Drummer 101,

Could you elaborate a bit?
What kind of music do you play? Do you prefer nylon or wooden tips?
Are you a hard hitter, or do you mice your drums so you can play relatively softly?

Cheers and Happy drumming

Harry

Re: Drumsticks

I've determined that I can't play with hickory sticks.
I moved to oak sticks which have been wonderful

Some here are real impressed with sugar maple... which is a hard maple wood.

Re: Drumsticks

How you play generaly dictates the stick you need ...I personaly use 5A or 5B depending where and with whom I am playing......want to go a little lighter the 7A is a popular size..a little heaver...2B. The composition is your preferance...wood or synthetic...wood tip or nylon.

How many sets of oak sticks have you gone through?

I was breaking hickory sticks after roughly two hours of play time. What was happening is the tips would chip and then a crack would run down a third of the stick along the grain. I have kids and don't get to play as often as I would like... so that worked out to me breaking about four sticks a month. I would be buying about 3 pair a month. At roughly $10 a pair that adds up quickly in the monthly budget.

For about the same price I bought a pair of 5A and 5B promark oak sticks. I have put at least 20+ hours on each pair and the tips are in perfect condition. The shaft of the sticks are dented all to hell from the rim shots though.

This isn't the first time I have played oak sticks. I don't think I have ever broke a pair of oak sticks... ever. I usually throw them away when I lose stick definition from the tips wearing down. I had one pair that lasted two years before I threw them away. When I was in High School I eventually convinced my band instructor to let me bring my own sticks (the oak pair) because i was breaking the marching sticks every other performance. I prefer the feel of oak now that I am playing them again. They are more solid... they don't bend and vibrate the heck out of my hand. They tire my hands out quicker since the vibrations are transfered to my hands more so than to the stick... but I hold my sticks pretty loose and hardly notice.

Re: Drumsticks

Hi im starting out and i would like to find out about these pair of drumsticks: PEARL 村石雅行 Model 157H. Its my favourite drummer Muraishi Masayuki's sticks, im having problems finding what it looks like cos no results come up when i google it.

I checked out pearl, but they only talk about sticks which are 5A or 5B, i havent seen anything which is 157H! Am i making a mistake somewhere? Please help me to clarify, thanks!
