Help with snare head selection...PLEASE

Hey what's up? I've been drumming for about 3-4 years now. Self taught. Recently in February a few guys I work with and I got together and started playing. We have our first gig on Aug 29th. I REALLY need new heads. I think I've decided on the G2 Clears for the Toms, but still up in the air about the snare. I got my Pulse kit in 2004. It's been pretty good to me, but the snare has never made me happy. I replaced the head on it back in 2006 with an Evans ST dry (14") and it was alright but never really had a good rebound or snap like I wanted...and I had it as tight as could be. The other week I bought an Evans EC2 Coated for it and I think it sounds TERRIBLE! I have to purchase another snare head and be don't want to be disappointed. It's really getting to crunch time on the gig...Could it just be my snare drum sucks? I noticed it only has 6 screws vs my buddy's and the one at church both have 8. Does that make a difference?

Any help on this would be much appreciated.

I play mostly rock.

Re: Help with snare head selection...PLEASE

There are other things that come into play with this....
If you have not changed the bottom head then do that. If you like Evans then go for the Hazy 200 for a snappy sound. Get new snare wire if there are any lose ones... this can kill your sound quickly. It might be the snare itself that isn't giving you what you want.

What sound are you looking for?
What are the specs on the drum you have?

As far as the lugs go... it can throw your snare out of tune quicker if you go with a smaller number of lugs around the drum.

You might be looking for the sound of a metal drum instead of wood.... it might be that the make up of that drum's wood is what is driving you batty. Go to a local drum shop and start testing out different snares. Also check out the drum tuning bible for what sound you would be looking for.

Realize that every little piece of the snare makes a huge difference in the sound... just changing the batter head will not do. As you said though the snare has never made you happy. Try going to a second hand music store and testing out their snares. You might find
a real good snare for a nice price.

Please post back with any questions.

Re: Help with snare head selection...PLEASE

ST dry solved my problem on a 5.5x14 wood. G2 Genera on my 6.5 X 14 works nice. Try the snares and reso head. Also, a 6 lug 14" snare is not going to give you the sound you want. I wouldn't space anything above a 12" shell over six lugs. The 10 lug will be awesome, but you'll pay. Exactly what are you looking for. Fat and dry, or wet? Snappy and quick? You looking to do some ghost strokes? Elaborate and one of these guys will help you out. Best of luck with your first show!

(btw, personally, I think it's a good idea to have 2 snares. Not only for different sounds, but as a back up).
