de-tuning

SO I'm having this problem with my 10 inch tom where the head de-tunes probably for every hour or so I play. It gets really annoying to suddenly think "what the heck is up with my tom?" and then have to fix it. The weird thing is that when I check the tuning, its only two of the lugs (the two closest to me) that de-tune creating that odd swooping kind of sound. If anybody has any suggestions as to why this is happening/ things to try, please let me know. Thanks.

Re: de-tuning

I would check the threads/lugs and possibly swap them around. It sounds like you play with a lot of power and hit the toms quite low down as opposed to centre, this may cause the skin to de-tune.

There are many other factors that may be a part:
do you have the toms angled or flat?
Type of batter head.
Number of lugs.
Weight of sticks,wood or nylon.
Room temperature.

Hope this helps a bit.

Re: de-tuning

I have a set of Yamaha Beech Customs. I'm not home right now to check on all that stuff, but I know I have remo coated (not sure about the type) heads, I play with regal tip nylon jazz sticks (real light and stand up to a pretty good beating). I already re-angled my tom, thinking maybe I was hitting the rim and messing something up that way, but it still de-tunes, just not as fast. It's in my basement, so it stays in a good temp range. I think I got all the stuff, and hopefully it'll help us figure this out. Thanks guys and let me know if you think of what it could be.

Re: de-tuning

That has happend to me in the past. Check out your lugs on
the drum and the screws. They could be striped and you may need new ones.
