Vater

Vater is an American drumstick and percussion accesssory manufacturing company. It was founded by Clarence Vater, and is currently run by his two grandsons Alan and Ron Vater. Although the company began producing sticks in 1956, it did not officially become Vater Percussion until much later. The first sticks made by a Vater were made by Joan (Adams) Vater, in Jacks drumshop in Boston, MA. Jacks was one of the first shops to offer custom models, and began producing custom models for Buddy Rich. In the early to mid 1980's what would become Vater began manufacturing drumsticks for Vic-Firth percussion and Zildjian Cymbals. On 10-22-1988 Vater moved their factory to Holbrook, MA. Three years later the first Vater drumsticks were introduced at a Percussive Arts Society show.

Re: Vater

Nice history catyjane. If you've got the knack for that kind of research, I wish you could investigate what happened to the Powertip company in Canada.

They made fantastic sticks (awesome weight and balance) with grooves in the handle for an easier grip. I used them about 15 years ago...got off track from my drumming with a day job....then when I returned to buy more, found out they had long since disappeared.

HeadHunter is the current Canadian stick maker that makes sticks with grooves. They've got the same cut as the Powertips but not quite the same weight and balance. I'm going to try and apply a finish lacquer to them to see if I get back to the Powertip form.

I wish I liked Vater, but once you spend years finding the perfect stick, it's very hard to change.

Re: Vater

Hey...great information. I had used promark and/or vic firth for years. I was in a show several years ago, and one of the other drummers suggested I try Vater drum sticks. I bought a couple of sets and now use Vater drum sticks and gloves. I'm not going to "down" the other guys but, would recommend Vater products to anyone, in fact if I'm in an area and can't find Vater I will order off line.

Haven't tried Vater? Give em a try....You will not be sorry !

Re: Vater

and vaters are amazing sticks. Didn't think I'd switch from pro mark but I love em. Don't chip/splinter as soon/easily n yea, they're the one wood tip sticks I've been able to play with without the tip chipping...lol, everyone should buy a pack n try em out personally.

I recently bought my first vater sticks pack and I liked them a lot!But I still prefer my old selection which was Zildjian anti-vibe wood tip drum sticks!!I don't think that any other type of sticks could fit better to me!

Re: Vater

I recently moved from pro-mark 747's to vic firth 2B's. Perhaps i'll have to give the Vaters a go based on the testimonies here.
