Re: minimal?...extensive?

i like having an extensive kit at home just so I can experiment with a bunch of things and have a bunch of options while making beats. If i was on the road i would probly chop my kit in half, and only use the pieces i need, just to make things easier. i always thought those drummers that use like three pieces and still sound rocknroll were cool.

Re: minimal?...extensive?

I prefer a larger kit. I am currently building a snare to add to my kit. I think the direction I am
going will be to have a total of three snares on my kit. I love a wide variety of sounds. It used
to be that the more drums the better for me... and now I find myself favoring snares and cymbals. My decision about drums grows over time. Some of the fun is to set what you
have in a different mannar... just to see what new patterns you can create.

Still, I grew up playing a four piece kit. From time to time it is nice to go back to those roots and
explore how many sounds you can get out of so few drums. I think a smaller kit lets you truly focus on learning how to groove.

Re: minimal?...extensive?

When I first started playing set I wanted a double bass 9 peice pearl set...now I play a 5 peice sonor that I have set up as a 4 peice...might get a bracket to add the the 10in. tom back on though cause I'd like a higher pitched tom now but I love playin on the kit. Wouold like another snare just for another effect but I love cymbals and usually if I add something else it's a cymbal :P Granted all I have now is hat, crash, ride, china but I'm looking to get another crash here...sabians chad smith sig. possibly.

Re: minimal?...extensive?

I have 2 kits that I use....the one that I use most has a 14"snare, 22"bass, 12" ride tom, 14"floor tom and 16" floor tom. The second kit has 14" snare ( same snare both kits ) 10", 12",14",16" toms all suspended and a 22" or 20" bass drum. The kit that I use depends on who I'm playing with and where.

Re: minimal?...extensive?

I have I guess what I would consider a medium size at home, 6 piece two up to down 22" bass. At this time I only have three cymbals on the set, Crash ride and Hi-hat. It I were to take the set out somewhere to play I would probably leave the second floor tom at home. I'm actually thinking about trading the Catalina 6 piece in for a better quality 4 piece kit, with a 20" bass. Maybe a Gretsch Reknown. The more I learn and the better I get, the more I realize that for the style of music I play (more POP oriented, and Jazz oriented stuff) the less equipment I need to do it.

Re: minimal?...extensive?

I've always played a 4 piece kit -- easy to fit in a car, easy to fit on the small stages you get in clubs and hotels, and you can play any song on them.

But I'm not gigging anymore and I want to experiment. So I bought another bass drum and two more toms. I'm going to get still more toms and hopefully a rack. I may never get to show off my chops except in jam sessions, but heck I'm having loads of fun. I have been a consistent, professional, very competent drummer with a minimalist approach. Now I'm pushing my boundaries and exploring the wild side!
