Snare Head Help

i have a Sensitone Metal Snare and I'm looking for a good snappy sound with no echo. I just bought a Remo Ambassador Controlled Sound batter head and clear Remo Ambassador resonants and im pretty dissapointed.

has anyone else had a problem with these heads or am i tuning my snare wrong, or could i have messed up the snare wires?

What heads should i try next?

Re: Snare Head Help

Look into these heads:

Evans EC Reversed Dot Coated Snare Batter Head

They reduce ring, sound crisp and tight.

Remember, there is always Moongel that you can put on the top head if you are trying to eliminate ring or reduce it--the more use use the less the drum will ring but it will develop a muffled crack if you use too much.

Hi VMDrummer,

I think the ideal choice for you would be the Aquarian Focus X, this is a textured coated skin of which you also have the choice of a power dot (for heavy play) .
I use the plain version without the power dot, it is very snappy and the vented clear muffling ring underneath the head takes care of any excessive ring.
When you want to hear a bit of ring you can still get it by hitting close to the hoop.
My personal opinion is that this type of head is one of the best heads money can buy!!

Cheers and happy drumming,

Harry

Re: Snare Head Help

Hi VMDrummer,
I too have a metal shell snare ( 1970's Premier Olympic, 14x6)
I have tried several batter heads and have found the one that delivers the sound I like is a Remo Coated Weatherking Pinstripe. I also have a Remo clear pinstripe reso,20 strand Pearl snare wires. I also use two squares of Moongel on the batter.
Other things to consider: how the drum is tuned, how much tension on the snare wires, type of stick used ( wood or nylon tip) and the actual stick power you use.
These are the main factors that affect snare sound, things like room temperature and the snare stand also play a part.
I would say that tuning is paramount.

Good luck.

Re: Snare Head Help

thanks, i shall look in to those heads.

would more snare strands give a snappier tone?

how do i get my snare to give a loud "crack" kinda sound? should the batter be tight and the resonant loose...what combinations of that would help me?

Re: Snare Head Help

No, quite the oppostie it'll give you more buzz. For s quicker sound you'll want to tighten the wires. Everyone's got different views on brands, my recomendation would be evans st dry. Mucho cracko.

Check this site Drum Tuning Bible for a great tuning method. If that doesn't work, you probably need a new drum. Perhaps Maple. I used to have a sensitone with my export and they are pretty average. I've now got a pearl brass free-floating 14"x6.5". Awesome.

Re: Snare Head Help

Coated Remo Pinstripe for me. Good crack when the batter is tightened up nice and tight, apply some moon-gel, and because it's two-ply and has that pinstripe, it has a nice sharp attack with a short delay when on a snare.

Re: Snare Head Help

the evans genera hd dry and genera dry are both really great snare heads that deliver a pure "CRACK" sound. the difference hd dry has 2 plies and the other 1 ply.
