drum head question

Hi i'm about to buy some drum heads and i would like to know does it make a difference if you only change the top skins?

do you have to change the top and bottom together?

i would like to know because i dont have much money

thanks

my drum kit is a Stage Custom advantage nouveau the skins what came with it are a bit to jazzy so
im going to get remo pinstripe skins...........is that a good choice?

Re: drum head question

If you get the Pinstripes be aware that they are a warmer sound with less stick attack. If that's what you want, go for it. The resonant heads (bottoms) can be an issue if you still are having a hard time getting the tone you want out of the Pinstripes, but I'd change the batters (tops) first to see how it turns out.

There is a primary sound inherent to the drums themselves, and if they are Birch they will automatically be brighter sounding. If maple, then changing the heads should help to bring out the warmer tone of the wood.

If you still need to get more warmth out of the heads, most of the ebony colored resonant heads are less bright, with less overtones and you can get more of the warm sound out of the shells (again, if they are maple) and you should start getting the sound you want.

Here's a good site that talks about tuning, head selection and shell material and plys etc.:

Good Luck!!!
