Beaters

I'd been looking to replace my drum pedal since the one that came with my set is awful. The brand is sunlite, and it squeaks and wobbles like a baby bird. I was planning on getting the Gibraltar single prowler pedal since my limit was at around $50, but then I found a practically brand new DW 7000 on craigslist for $50 so I decided to go for it. The pedal feels great, especially in comparison to that contraption that I was trying to use before.

The only problem is that it did not come with a beater, so I took the one from my old pedal. I would like to buy a new beater for this pedal and want something fairly inexpensive. To give you an idea I've only been playing for about a month, so I really don't need anything fancy. Right now the only living creatures that are subjected to my playing are my drum teacher and my cats. Eventually when I get better I would be interested in joining a band, my favorite music is indie rock. So I don't imagine that I would need something particularly loud, but maybe not super quiet either. So I'm open to suggestions!

Thanks,
Laura

Re: Beaters

Laura,

You should be able to purchase a beater from any music store that sells drums, or you can look online also. I would say a combo felt/rubber beater would be the best choice for an all around, play most genres kind of sound. Here are some links to check out:

Ebay: DW Drum Workshop Bass Kick BEATER (1) - eBay (item 230378163987 end time Sep-22-09 12:00:07 PDT)

Re: Beaters

Hmm, well, it all really depends on how much you want to spend on the beater, and what kind of sound you want.

If you want a more thumpier sound that's just plain deep and thump sound, you would be good with felt, it makes the sound softer is the best way I can put it.

If you want a punchy sound, you should go for a plastic beater. Wood would actually be good for punchy sounds also.

I've never tried rubber, so I don't know the sound of using them.

Re: Beaters

I'd recommend a hard felt beater, round head, with a long shaft and substantial weight to it (sorry, sounds more x-rated than I intended).

I bought 3 cheap pedals recently so I could set up practice pads and I was shocked at the variety of felt beaters that came with the pedals. One shaft was too short to get to the center area of a 22" bass drum, and 2 of them were so soft and light weight that I couldn't get a good bounce out of them.
