What to use on hands? Hello all! I have been drumming more than normal and have accumulated about 5 different blisters. I can take the pain but why should i have too? I have found that black electrical tape has worked really well so far. I was wondering if anyone uses gloves? If so what kind would you recommend? I thought about using gloves for practice since practice is way longer than doing a show. Any other suggestions are always welcomed. |

Re: What to use on hands? Hi Hokie,
I have been thinking getting gloves myself. I have examined a few, they are very,very light and extremely supple. Carter Beauford from the Dave Matthews Band uses them, that is a qualification in its own right!
Cheers and Happy Drumming,

Re: What to use on hands? i had this problem for a while, but i eventually developed calluses and the problem is gone.
if you dont know already, you should never pop a blister, only puncture it with a needle and push the liquid out. your body can still use the layer of skin for callus that it pushed away due to the irritation caused by the sticks.
if parts of your hands dont callus well, like below your thumb (thats where i have a problem), you can rub meat tenderizer on it, and it will help. i have no idea why or how this works but it does.
also, you may be gripping your sticks wrong, but i dunno. if you hold them too tight, obviously it will cause your skin to get irritated and blister. if you dont know for sure, then check.
happy drumming

Re: What to use on hands? I used to use gloves but they greatly impeaded my finger movement.
Now I use tennis racket grip tape, it's awsome.
1 roll will grip up two sticks, it's a lot cheaper than "stick grip" and it feels great. Give it a try, you won't be dissapointed. |

Re: What to use on hands? Hi again Hokie;
If you have a blister any where, you are holding the sticks WRONG. You will in time build up a kind of callous along the edge of your pointer finger. Any callous on your palm or any other part of your hand should NOT be there. Are you holding the sticks with your thumb on top?? If so -Dump it. Thumbs on side of stick, COMPLETELY RELAXED. When you look down on your wrists, you should be able to see all 5 knuckles. There is absolutely NO PAIN involved in playing drums. Please let us know how you are holding the sticks.

Re: What to use on hands? Hokie;
If you wear gloves to play, you might as well wear a pair of good old farmers boots too.
Also don't forget to get that winter hat with the big ear flaps like Elmer Fudd wears.
That way you will not be able to hear or feel anything when you play. If your just a basher, then it won't matter. But if you like to "play" drums like a musical instrument, you need to FEEL what you are playing. Trust me---check your grip. |

Re: What to use on hands? hi
i think you should wait it out and then youll get calluses and then you wont think twice about it. one thing i find helps calluses grow faster is to massage your hands undere some soapy hot water two or three times a day. it really helps |

Re: What to use on hands? Hokie I believe that I once gave you some advice so did alot of others, you said you like to play fast so you obviously still have problems. I know of a type of gloves that you definitely need, if they don't work I'm afraid your wasting your time. Anyway these are not regular gloves that drummers use they were made for drummers by a drummer and they work great I have a pair and seldom use them, they are entirely different than what you see in a store or what anybody tells you about gloves.They will improve your hands and speed look them up on line go to Triplet Drum Glove you can purchase them through Drumbum.com they have them as well and they are worth the money LET ME KNOW WHAT YOU THINK WHEN YOU SEE THEM AND IF YOUR GOING TO BUY THEM I BELIEVE THEY WILL WORK FOR YOU BUT I DON'T KNOW HOW LONG FOR BECAUSE YOU STILL NEED ALOT OF INSTRUCTION AND DISCIPLINE ON THE DRUMS GOOD LUCK SLINGERLAND |
