Talking Bass drum resonant head!!!

what's up internet buds! my bass drum resonant head ripped all the way across the head when i was cutting a port, messed up, and then i proceeded to throw it like a frisbee. "*WARNING- DO NOT THROW PARTIALLY RIPPED DRUM HEADS LIKE A FRISBEE*". so tell me the best for a really low full bodied thump. it will be paired with the stock batter head (i have put a ring of weather stripping around the outside edge of the head and behind where the beaters hit) and a gibralter double bass pedal.

I've heard really good things and have played Aquarian and Evans resonant heads.

Hey cooldrummer...I can't suggest a good head (haven't bought one in 20 years) but I've never heard of anyone putting weather stripping on the head. Does it provide just the right amount of dampening? You must have a booming bass drum.

Re: Bass drum resonant head!!!

At my highschool we put weatherstripping on the insides of the marching bass drums to give them a really short thud. So if you want that kind of sound its a good idea. Although it dampens them A LOT!
The evans emad has interchangeable foam rings that dampens it different amounts i think that would be a better idea for a drum set bass drum.

i have a single ply batter head (stock). so it sounded wierd when i cut the port hole (solid thump but had this uber-wierd undescribable pop sound with an overtone) so the weather stripping solved that prob and plus the weather stripping makes it look like the evans emad at first glance!

Re: Bass drum resonant head!!!

I see you're a fan of the nine so you may appreciate my advise.

I don't use what the great man does, but i've modelled my sound quite closely. I use an evans clear eq4 on the batter with a thin plastic falam pad and a t-shirt thrown loosley against it. This gives a lot of attack while retaining the oomph.

My reso is an evans eq3 which comes with a re-inforced 5" hole. Resonates well and tunes nice and low.

I'll also point out the value of a beater head. The less beater touching the batter the better. I use the pearl quad beater that came with my eliminators (they are available seperately) the vertically rounded plastic side offers a bright impact and does muffle the head with unnecessary contact.

Maximum attack, maximum punch. That's what it's about baby.

Re: Bass drum resonant head!!!

skinslapper thats actually just about the same heads im using now. I have an eq4 for batter and a stock tama reso head. I was going to get a superkick 2 but I wasnt using my old drumset so I took the bass head from that and put it on my new drumset and it sounds pretty nice. Once I do get a new head I am thinking about getting a superkick 2 though. Also I keep a blanket in my bass drum.

Re: Bass drum resonant head!!!

I don't think enough people are using the white remo ambassadors on both front and back with nothing inside the drum. Or, a black dot on the beater side and a clear ambassador on the front, again, with nothing in the drum.

Of course, it doesn't work for everything, but man, can you shake the walls!

I suggest you folks be brave and try this head selection at your next wedding gig!!
