Advice needed for controlled sounding drumheads ?

My first post here Anyway im a newbie to drum heads cause i live in a country where drums isnt big at all, as a matter of fact its extremely difficult to get a proper selection of heads at all and u cant try them on. That country is brunei. Im currently studying in the UK so I have a golden chance to get good gear here and bring it back during the holidays, unfortunately im at loughborough where there are completely no drum shops. So im planning on buying these online

I play pop, rock, metal and I want a controlled clean sound without much resonance, overtones or ringing, i guess im looking for more control and attack but obviously not to the point of being extreme. Any recommodations for snare, toms and bass heads ? I own a pearl vision (which i paid an insane amount for even though its not a pro kit) back home, its 14, 10, 12 and 16 with 22kick

I understand that twin ply heads give that attack and controlled sound, but im unsure what to put as a resonant head for all of my drums if i choose to put twin plys on top (snare, toms)

my current rough idea from reading reviews and magazines are

coated emperor top, hazy emperor bottom on snare
emperor on toms (coated or clear no idea) and resonant head for toms no idea as well
bass drum (just want a batter head not sure what either im reading superkick has that punchy sound, dont want boomy sound)

any advice would be gladly taken

ps i posted drummerworld as well so incase u see dont think its spam im just looking for as much advice as i can get. lol thanks 1

Re: Advice needed for controlled sounding drumheads ?

Until recently I was a Remo guy but have changed to all Evans heads becuase of their sound. I never did like the overtone I had with my Pinstripes.

I use Evans EC1s batters on my small toms (if you want little sustain I would use EC2s) and EC2s batters on my bigger toms. The have very controlled tone with little ring. The reso that works best with these is the EC Reso.

I use Evans ST Dry batters on my snares and the Hazy 300s for the resos. (still leaves some ring on my metal snare drums) If you have a metal snare and want to dampen all that ring out then a Genre HD or HD Dry would do better for you on the batter side.

I use an Evans EMAD2 batter for my bass and a stock DW reso (made by Remo).

I use pinstripe double coated on my kit on the batter side.

I use clear on the bottom. On all the drums the Bass. I use double coated Pinstripes on both sides.

If you problem is too much resonance, that's an easy fix. Get some resonator "Gel" or "Rings".

Okay I'll throw my hat in.

Evans ec2 clear on batter for toms, g1 clear reso. St dry coated on snare batter and hazy 300 on reso. Eq3 clear for bass on batter with a falam pad and eq2 on reso, if you still want more focus on kick then throw an old tshirt against the batter.

Personally I found remos to go dead a lot faster than Evans and the last thing you want is to be replacing heads more often.

Re: Advice needed for controlled sounding drumheads ?

I've recently put Remo Black Suede heads on my toms, and this is the happiest I have ever been with the sound....IMO

for me:
clear heads = too much ring
coated = too little ring
Black Suede = just right (like the middle ground, can be used for all styles of music)
:-)
