Hey guys. I need to know what the advantages are to having a porthole in the resonate head. Also whats the difference between resonance heads on a bass? And finally what head would be best for Hard Rock/Metal?
A port hole does two things really. First it gives you a place to mic the drum or run the mic cord out of the drum and it also removes some of the resonance (overtone or ring) from the drum. Rock drummers use port holes to get a deep thud out of a bass drum. If you are playing jazz, then you wouldn't want a ported reso.
