Someone HELP ME PLEASE!! Left pedal won't stay still!! Hi guys, I've made a few threads on this subject which never took off and I never got replies on, so I'm begging you, if you have a couple of minutes and think you can help, PLEASE PLEASE DO!
For the last 2 years (since I took up drums again) I've been totally unable to keep my left bass pedal (i use double kicks) to stay where I want it when I play! This has resulted in a number of angry holes in the plasterboard of my practice room (I have anger issues, thus I started drumming) and I can't practice for more than a few minutes at a time because my pedal slips away from me, I get angry with it and have to go and chill out for a while, by which time, something in my schedule stops me continuing.
DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY IDEA HOW TO KEEP THIS PEDAL STILL?? I cannot beleive that I seem to be the only one who's ever had this problem, nor that both pairs of kicks I've had are apparently not designed with this problem in mind!!!
I have tried:
Duct tape to the carpet, taking the spacer springs off the screws for the (F**KING USELESS) carpet spikes so they dig further into the carpet, adjusting and readjusting the position of my pedal and the length of the driveshaft and all about a thousand times every time I sit at my kit.
PLEASE HELP!!
WHAT CAN I DO?????
Thanks

Re: Someone HELP ME PLEASE!! Left pedal won't stay still!! What kind of pedal are you using out of curiosity.
So if I am understanding this correctly the pedal moves away from you as you play. Do you have the set on a short pile carpet, like a berber? If so go get a deep pile remnant from a carpet store and set the kit up on that, it should be an inexpensive remedy. If that isn't the case I have heard of guys rigging a piece of string or nylon cord from the heel of the pedal to the leg of the throne and that seems to work ok. Another remedy would be to place a sand bag or stack of iron wieghts (or something similarly heavy) behind the pedal.
If I think about it a bit, I am sure I can come up with other ideas too. |

Re: Someone HELP ME PLEASE!! Left pedal won't stay still!! so the spikes arent working at all?
my pedals have velcro on the bottom of them, and when set up on carpet, it seems to help hold it down quite a bit. its good velcro.
you could probably combine all the ideas you get if one alone doesnt help.
see if you can get some velcro, use the spikes, get some thick carpet, some weights, and tie your pedal to a stand. that should keep your pedal where it is.
if it doesnt, then you are kicking too hard! |

Re: Someone HELP ME PLEASE!! Left pedal won't stay still!! Thanks man, I'll see if I can get an extra bit of carpet - mine is short pile and it's just on concrete rather than having the underlay which is usually there so it would make sense that the spikes wouldn't work too well.
The pedals I use are yamaha, once top of the range, don't know what model since they're second hand but they're dual chain drive, adjustable most-things... They're good pedals other than this problem, which as it turns out, possibly isn't the kicks' fault.
Thanks again

Re: Someone HELP ME PLEASE!! Left pedal won't stay still!! Haha if doing ALL of that doesn't keep it still I should probably submit it to some scientific community as a perpetual motion device, I'm sure it could be used to generate energy!
Thanks very much for your idea, I think your one about the velcro is a particularly good idea. I'll try a thicker carpet, get some velcro strips, and if that doesn't do the trick, I'll tie the ****er up and weigh it down with anvils if I have to!
Thanks man!

Re: Someone HELP ME PLEASE!! Left pedal won't stay still!! If your laying that carpet on a concrete floor, then you should get two 3/4" plywood sheets and place the kit on top of that.
This way the spikes alone could have something to bite into.
So a couple of 4x8 plywood should solve your problem permanently. You just cant place carpet on cement floors and expect it to work.
By using the plywood, it also helps with the acoustics.
I had the same problem. |

Re: Someone HELP ME PLEASE!! Left pedal won't stay still!! Thanks mate, it's good to know someone has had the same experience!
I'm trying (as we speak) putting an extra section of carpet under my kit so there's two layers under there now.
If that doesn't do the trick, I'll definitely try the plywood idea.
Thanks again.

Re: Someone HELP ME PLEASE!! Left pedal won't stay still!! That may work at first for a little while. But once the carpet tears your back to square one.
Been there, did that.
I also place two 3"6'x8' hard foam under the plywood. The more substance, the better the acoustics.
I hope what your doing works for you.
Good Luck. |

Re: Someone HELP ME PLEASE!! Left pedal won't stay still!! All the ideas are good the plywood, foam extra carpet, I was wondering if all the drum set even the seat is sitting on the carpet, a big carpet for the whole drum set nothing was said about that. |

Re: Someone HELP ME PLEASE!! Left pedal won't stay still!! I used to have this problem every-so-often, so I tied my pedal to the drum stool by threading the tie-down thru the space between the floor plate and the actual foot plate, then to the thrones legs. make sure that the pedal is secure to the BD rim. Try that. It is not a perfect world, however it might work for you.
