Re: Snare Wire

So just by changing the wires you can greatly alter the sound of your snare? My current snare is a 14" Metal Pearl Export series with Remo ambassadors on both sides and i dont really like the sound i get + there is to much snare buzz from the toms and to much extra sustain from a simple snare hit. i Really Really like the sound that come's out of Mike Portnoy's Snare during the song honor thy father, that nice high pitched crack with almost no sustain. So what snare wires would go with what i just discribed?

Re: Snare Wire

i really dont know what snares you should get because your snare is different than mike portnoy's. the first thing i would try is to remove 2 snare strands from the middle of the snares and then tune it up to the pitch you want and if you still think you have too many snares, cut 2 more off. i would recommend not going below 8 strands.

you could try some different heads. maybe the ones mike portnoy uses.

many things could contribute to the snare buzz. try tuning your toms different. pick out the tom that does the snare buzz and then tune it out.

Re: Snare Wire

On my snare right now I have an EVANS HD dry, Hazy 300, and puresound 16 strand blasters. I tune the snares medium tight, batter really tight, and reso medium tight. that gets me a really nice crack with just enough snare sound. Everyone who just read that should try it out if you have a little extra cash, if you like a snare that has a nice crack then that combination of tuning heads and snares will not do you wrong.
