vintage snare help please! I have an old ludwig snare and I was just tuning up on the bottom end and one of the lugs seems to have snapped or something and now whenever I try to tune that lug it just goes tight only to a certain point and then seems to reset. can anyone help me please? |

Re: vintage snare help please! Sounds like you've stripped either the screw(bolt), or the lug. Look at the bolt, and if the threads look fine, then you'll need to replace the lug, because the threads inside are worn out and stripped. Personally, I think replacing the lug will be easier if it's a standard size. If not, then I say replace both the lug and the screw, to some that fit each other. Downside: you'll have your very own FRANKEN-SNARE! |

Re: vintage snare help please! Sorry, I told you, but it was well hidden within the post. Take out the screw, and look at the threads. If you hold the screw vertically, the screw should look bumpy. If it looks flat(or if it FEELS smooth), then your problem lies in the screw. If it looks OK, then your lugs is stripped. You'll probably want to replace both, just to be sure, but maybe not.
Oh I forgot, if you push the screw into the lug(not turn, actually push it), and it goes in, you've definitely stripped it. |

Re: vintage snare help please! oh okay, thanks. sorry Im relatively new to having an actual acoustic set (especially it being vintage) and I wasnt sure how to check it. the actual screw seems quite solid, I guess I messed up the lug. as far as taking that off and replacing it is beyond me but I'll see if I can it fixed. when I took it to this place the guy thought it was the stores and had it for sale when I picked up my amplifier that he was fixing haha, so I guess I'll have to take it back and see if he can actually fix it (and not sell it).
Thanks! |

Re: vintage snare help please! actually, I think I may have found the actually type of lug thats available to be ordered. its definately slingerland since I have the original head that came with it and it says slingerland, not to mention these lugs look exactly the same as the ones on my snare! can you tell me anything about taking off and putting back on lugs? |

Re: vintage snare help please! After getting a replacement lug and screws, you can simply remove heads, snare assembly and the two mounting screws that hold the lug in place from the inside of your snare drum.
If you have a small ratchet set, it will be easier than using a pair of pliers.
It's better to play it safe by replacing both the lug and the screws. The previous screw or lug that have crossed threads may damage the new ones.
So easy, a cave man can do it. |

Re: vintage snare help please! If you have clear heads on either your snare or your toms, look inside of the drum. On the inside, you should see screws periodically where the lugs are(on the outside). Remember to first unscrew the bolts off the drum heads!! When you have done that, unscrew whatever lug you want to take off, then screw in the new lug. |

Re: vintage snare help please! actually, I just sort of switched around some of the screws (cause they are all of varying sizes) and it seems to work just fine! getting it to sound good however is another thing, but at least its functioning as regular! also I guess my set is actually a slingerland I was just mislead by what some people told me plus some of the heads are ludwig
could you give me any tips on getting it to sound good again? | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
